Aether Legends Brings Classic Mod to Bedrock as Paid DLC

On July 14, 2026, Mojang published an official Minecraft.net article announcing Aether Legends, a Bedrock Edition DLC that reimagines one of the most iconic Minecraft mods ever made. Developed by Spark Universe in collaboration with the original Aether Team, the DLC brings the Aether dimension to Bedrock for the first time. It is available now on the Minecraft Marketplace for 1,690 Minecoins (approximately $8.45 to $9.99 USD).

What Aether Legends Actually Is

Unlike the original Java mod, which generated its sky dimension procedurally, Aether Legends is a massive pre-built world spanning 5,000 by 5,000 blocks. You create it as a new Minecraft world. It cannot be added to existing saves.

Entry works the way Aether veterans remember. You build a portal from glowstone, commonly found in the Nether, and step through. On the other side you will find familiar ores like Ambrosium, Zanite, and Gravitite. The creatures are straight out of mod history: aerwhales, phygs (flying pigs), flying cows, moa, and aerbunnies that you can wear as hats.

Three bosses wait inside: the Slider, the Valkyrie Queen, and the final foe Karthul. If you played the Java mod you will recognize the Slider and the Valkyrie Queen. Karthul is new. The Java mod's final boss was the Sun Spirit, and the announcement does not clarify whether Karthul is connected to that entity.

How It Differs from the Java Mod

This is a reimagining, not a port. The world is hand-built rather than procedurally generated. The final boss is different. And it is a paid Marketplace DLC rather than a free open-source mod.

The original Java Aether mod has been free and open-source for over a decade, with roughly 74 million downloads on CurseForge. Aether Legends does not replace it. The original mod remains available and maintained separately on CurseForge and Modrinth. If you play Java Edition, nothing changes for you.

Why This Matters

The Aether originally released in 2011 and became one of the most legendary Minecraft mods ever made. Seeing it get an official Bedrock release through Mojang's own channels is a notable milestone for a project that started as a community mod. It also marks a commercial step: a modding project that has been free and open-source on Java for over a decade now has a paid release on Bedrock.

Aether Legends is Bedrock-only and whether it will ever come to Java is unconfirmed. For now, Bedrock players can grab it on the Marketplace, and Java players can still enjoy the original Aether mod for free.
