If you love exploration and want a whole new world to survive in, The Aether is one of the most iconic dimension mods ever created. It originally launched in 2011 and has been kept up to date for modern Minecraft ever since. With roughly 74 million downloads, it has earned legendary status in the modding community. A Hostile Paradise in the Sky

To enter the Aether, build a portal with a 5×4 Glowstone frame and pour a water bucket inside to light it. Step through and you arrive in a dimension of vast skylands and floating islands. Just watch your step, because falling off drops you right back into the Overworld. That drop is a core design feature, not a bug.

The dimension has Eternal Day by default, meaning there is no night cycle until you conquer the final dungeon. After that, the Sun Altar utility block lets you control the day cycle yourself. The whole dimension runs on its own survival progression with new ores and creatures that feel vanilla-esque but distinctly otherworldly.

Tool Tiers, Accessories, and Moa Mounts

The Aether gives you four material tiers to work with: Skyroot, Holystone, Zanite, and Gravitite. Each tier has its own tools and weapons with unique abilities, so progression feels different from vanilla. Vanilla tools are less efficient in the Aether by default, which pushes you toward crafting and using the mod's own gear.

Three utility blocks help you process what you find: the Altar, the Freezer, and the Incubator. The accessory system uses a dedicated GUI that lets you equip loot you discover throughout your adventure, giving you passive bonuses and abilities. The Book of Lore has an entry for every block and item the mod adds, so you can look up anything you find.

Moa are flying mobs you can mount, and they come in different tiers with varying jump counts. Taming and riding one is one of the best ways to navigate the floating islands without falling to your doom.

Three Dungeons with Boss Fights

The Aether has three dungeons, each with a boss and unique loot.

The Bronze Dungeon is home to the Sentries and guarded by the Slider, a creature born of pure stone. You will want your best gear before you challenge it. Look out for hidden tunnels through the islands.

The Silver Dungeon is the Valkyrie Temple. You fight the knights of the Valkyrie Order first, and if you prove worthy, you face the Valkyrie Queen herself. She is an ancient warrior, so bring every tool and trick you have.

The Gold Dungeon is the rarest and holds the Sun Spirit, an eternal being of pure fire and energy. He rules the Sun itself and will not even pay attention to you without some convincing. The reward is some of the best treasure in the mod.

How to Install The Aether

Install your preferred mod loader (Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge). If you need help, check our general mod installation guide.

For multiplayer, the client must have the mod installed. The server side is optional.
