Mojang announced that the native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft arrives October 27, 2026. It ships with Vibrant Visuals enabled as the default visual experience, making Switch 2 the first Nintendo platform to get Mojang's built-in shader-like graphics overhaul out of the box.

What launches on October 27

The October 27 release is the optimized native edition. Minecraft has already been playable on Switch 2 through backward compatibility, but this is the version built specifically for the hardware.

Vibrant Visuals originally debuted in June 2025 alongside the Chase the Skies update. Mojang called it "Minecraft's biggest visual graphics update to date." The feature set includes directional lighting, volumetric fog, moving shadows, water reflections, and infinite-appearing clouds.

The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up pack is getting an update to take advantage of the enhanced lighting. Locations like Peach's castle and Delfino Plaza will render with the new visuals. Marketplace content will generally support Vibrant Visuals, though Mojang noted it won't be available in split-screen or when using certain Marketplace Worlds and content.

Upgrade path for current Switch owners

Mojang confirmed a "digital upgrade path" for players who already own Minecraft on the original Switch. Save data carries over from the Switch version. The company has not specified pricing or terms, so whether the upgrade is free or paid remains unconfirmed.

An earlier announcement article was published June 9, 2026. The release-date details followed on August 5.

What this means for shader players

Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's first-party answer to the community shader packs that Java players have relied on for years. If you play on Java and want a similar look, Visual Vibrance recreates the Bedrock Vibrant Visuals aesthetic through Iris. You can set it up with our Iris installation guide.

For comparison, packs like BSL Shaders and Complementary Unbound have long offered directional lighting, volumetric fog, and reflective water on Java Edition. The Switch 2 launch gives console players a baseline that modded Java players have had for years, but through Mojang's own implementation rather than a community pack.

Watch for Mojang to share more on the upgrade path terms as October 27 approaches. The biggest open question is whether existing Switch owners get the native version for free or pay to move over.
