Armor trims in vanilla Minecraft look great but do nothing functional. BetterTrims fixes that by giving each trim material a real effect the moment you wear it, turning a cosmetic reward into something worth chasing. It is a lightweight, data-driven mod that stacks cleanly with the rest of your loadout.

What Each Armor Trim Material Does

Every vanilla trim material grants a different bonus while the trimmed piece is equipped. Effects stack across a full set, so a four-piece suit feels noticeably stronger than one lonely item.

Quartz: Increase bonus experience gained.

Iron: Increase your mining speed.

Netherite: Cannot be destroyed by lava or fire, and grants damage reduction against fire and lava.

Redstone: Increase your movement speed.

Copper: Swim faster (this does not stack with Depth Strider or Dolphin's Grace).

Gold: Piglins ignore you.

Emerald: Provides a discount on trades with villagers.

Diamond: Grants extra damage reduction.

Lapis: Pieces are more enchantable.

Amethyst: Each piece has a chance per second to shave one second off a negative potion effect, or extend a positive one by one second.

Expanded and Modded Materials

Beyond the core set, BetterTrims adds effects to more exotic materials and supports modded trim types through its data-driven system. The included datapacks cover extra materials like Coal (which speeds furnace cooking for players nearby), Dragon's Breath (sharing active potion effects with those around you), Chorus Fruit and Ender Pearl (dodge chances), Echo Shard (calming sculk sensors), Nether Brick (blaze and wither skeleton behavior), and Prismarine Shard (guardian interactions). Modded materials such as Platinum and Silver plug into the same property system so pack makers can define their own bonuses.

Installing BetterTrims

The mod runs on both client and server, so make sure every player on a realm or dedicated server has it.

  1. Install Fabric or NeoForge first, depending on which loader your world already uses. Fabric players also need Fabric API.
  2. Drop the BetterTrims JAR into your mods folder.
  3. Launch the game and confirm the mod appears in your mod list.

If you are brand new to adding mods, our how to install Minecraft mods walkthrough covers the folder locations and common pitfalls in detail.

Data Packs and Customization

BetterTrims ships with two datapacks. The Default pack keeps effects close to the classic 2.x behavior most players remember, while the Trim Effects pack reinterprets and rebalances the popular TrimsEffects concept. Because the whole system is data-driven, you can edit trim properties with a plain text file, add conditions based on the predicate data API, and even write custom set bonuses. Tooltips update automatically and only show the info that matters in context, with advanced conditions expanding when you hold Shift.

BetterTrims FAQ

Do trims still work if I only wear one piece?

Yes. Each equipped piece contributes its effect independently, so a single trimmed helmet still grants its bonus. The benefit simply grows as you add matching pieces across the set.

Will this slow down my game?

No. BetterTrims is a lightweight mod that touches equipment behavior rather than rendering or world generation, so performance impact is negligible even on modest hardware.

Can server owners tweak the effects?

They can. Every trim property lives in a datapack file, so server admins can rebalance numbers, disable an effect they dislike, or invent entirely new materials without touching code.

Is BetterTrims still being maintained?

The project is active, with the current 4.0.x line being a full rewrite that introduced the data-driven property system. Check the project page for the latest release and current status.
