How to Install the Fabric Loader

1. Install Java. Minecraft and the Fabric installer both need a Java runtime. If you don't have one, download the latest JDK from the official Java site and install it.

2. Download the Fabric Installer. Grab the installer jar from the official download page.

3. Run the installer. Double-click the downloaded file to open it.

Pick your Minecraft version from the dropdown. Tick Show Snapshots if you want a snapshot build. Leave the loader version on the latest recommended option, and keep the install location set to your default Minecraft folder. Leave Create Profile checked so the installer adds a launch profile for you.

Click Install.

4. Finish the installation. You should see a "Successfully installed" message. Close the dialog and the installer, then open the Minecraft Launcher. Your new Fabric profile appears in the installations list.

You can launch the profile now, but most mods will not run yet. They need the Fabric API first.

Add the Fabric API and Your First Mods

The Fabric API is a small mod that supplies shared hooks for other mods. Treat it as the first mod you install, because most mods depend on it.

Download the Fabric API jar matching your Minecraft version and drop it into your mods folder. On Windows that folder lives at %appdata%/.minecraft/mods. Create it if it doesn't exist yet.

Fabric vs Forge and Other Loaders

Fabric and Forge take opposite approaches. Forge bundles a large, stable API that prioritizes mod compatibility, while Fabric keeps the core tiny and pushes shared code into optional libraries like the Fabric API. That makes Fabric lighter and faster to update, but Forge still hosts a larger back catalog of older mods.

You can't mix them in one profile. Mods built for one loader won't load in the other, so pick the loader your chosen mods support and set up separate profiles if you want both. Note that OptiFine and Fabric don't coexist cleanly, so if you only need shaders, a dedicated shader setup is usually the cleaner path.

Do I need the Fabric API for every mod? Not every mod, but most of them. The API provides the shared hooks that mods rely on, so install it first and save yourself missing-mod errors.

Can Fabric and Forge run in the same profile? No. They modify the game in different ways, so a mod built for one won't load in the other. Use separate launcher profiles for each.
