Isle of Berk | How to Train Your Dragon Mod

The Isle of Berk mod drops the How to Train Your Dragon universe into Minecraft, letting you tame, breed, and ride a dozen dragons across your world. It is a Forge-only project built by a small team of HTTYD fans, and it leans on GeckoLib to animate every species so each one moves and fights the way you would expect from the films.

Dragons you can find in the world

The mod adds 12 dragons pulled from the movies, the series, and the live show. Each one spawns in its own set of biomes and behaves differently once tamed. The roster covers the Night Fury, Light Fury, Nightlight, Skrill, Triple Stryke, Gronckle, Deadly Nadder, Monstrous Nightmare, Hideious Zippleback, Terrible Terror, Speed Stinger, and the Stinger from the live show.

Where each dragon spawns

Dragon spawns are biome-locked, so tracking down a Night Fury means climbing into snowy peaks rather than wandering plains. The list below covers where you should look for each species.

After taming a pair you can start breeding them, which is how you grow your flock over time.

Taming, riding, and breeding your dragon

The taming rules are strict, which is part of what makes earning a dragon feel worth it. Strip off your armor and weapons, equip night vision if you are going for a Night Fury, and approach carefully so you do not spook the mob. A tamed dragon accepts a saddle, carries items in its own inventory, and follows you across the world.

Mount a tamed dragon to take to the sky. The R key fires its breath attack and the X key triggers its special ability, so each species feels distinct in combat rather than being a reskin. When you are ready to grow your flock, breed pairs with fish such as salmon, cod, or tropical fish, and the offspring inherit the parents' traits.

From exploring the vast landscapes to engaging in aerial battles, a tamed dragon turns the world into something you experience from above rather than on foot.

Installing Isle of Berk

The mod runs on Forge for Minecraft Java Edition, so set up Forge first, then drop the jar into your mods folder. Frequently asked questions

Is Isle of Berk still being updated?

No. The team marked the project discontinued and moved on to a successor. The last release is from December 2023. Check the project page for current status, since the original is frozen where it stopped.

Do I need GeckoLib?

Yes, GeckoLib is a hard requirement. The animations for every dragon run through it, and the mod will not load without that library in your mods folder.

Can I fly and fight on a tamed dragon?

Yes. Once a dragon is saddled you can mount it, press R to use its breath attack, and press X to trigger its special ability. Each species has its own attack pattern, so a Night Fury handles differently from a Gronckle.

Does it work with other dragon mods?

Isle of Berk is self-contained, so it loads fine alongside most Forge mods as long as GeckoLib is present. It does not share taming or breeding logic with other dragon mods, so each dragon system stays separate.
