Iris Shaders | How to Install Shaders

Iris Shaders brings OptiFine shader packs to Minecraft Java Edition with Sodium bundled for fast framerates. This guide walks through three install methods.

Iris Shaders is the open-source shader mod that lets Minecraft Java Edition load OptiFine shader packs without OptiFine itself. It ships bundled with Sodium, the rendering optimization mod, so you get the visuals and the framerate in one download. Below are three ways to set it up, from a one-click installer to a manual drop into an existing Fabric profile.

Why Pick Iris Over OptiFine

OptiFine has carried shaders for years, but it locks you into a single mod and a slower update cadence. Iris splits the job in two. It handles shader pack rendering, and the bundled Sodium handles the rendering performance work. The result is comparable or better framerates on most hardware, plus compatibility with the broader Fabric mod ecosystem. You also get access to Iris-enhanced packs that use features OptiFine never adopted.

What Iris Actually Does

Iris loads standard OptiFine shader packs and Iris-native packs that push further, things like ray-traced lighting in supported packs. It is client-side only, so servers never need it installed. The bundled Sodium rewrites Minecraft's rendering engine to cut draw calls and cull work the camera cannot see, which is where most of the framerate gain comes from.

Method 1: The Iris Installer for Standalone Use

If you only want shaders and no other mods, this is the fastest path.

  1. Open the Iris shaders download page on the official Iris site.
  2. Click the "Download universal JAR" button.
  3. Save the file anywhere on your computer and run it. Java is required to launch the installer, so install Java first if your system does not have it.
  4. The installer window opens.
  5. Under the "Select game version" dropdown, pick your preferred Minecraft version.
  6. Click the "Install" button.
  7. If a prompt asks "Microsoft Store / Xbox", pick that if you use the new launcher. Otherwise choose "Standalone (Win32)".
  8. When the progress bar finishes you should see a "Completed!" message.
  9. Close the installer.
  10. Open the Minecraft launcher and select the new Iris shaders profile to play.

Method 2: Install Iris on a Fabric Profile Through the Iris Installer

Use this when you want Iris alongside other Fabric mods. Double-check that your other mods are compatible with Iris and Sodium first.

  1. Follow steps 1 through 5 from the standalone method above.
  2. Under "Installation type", select "Fabric install".
  3. Continue with steps 6 through 9 from the standalone method.
  4. Drop your other mods into the mods folder.
  5. Open the Minecraft launcher and pick the new Fabric profile to run Iris with your mods.

Method 3: Add Iris to a Fabric Profile Manually

This skips the Iris installer and uses the official Fabric installer instead. Start with our Fabric loader guide and the general how to install Minecraft mods walkthrough.

  1. Download the Fabric installer and run it, following the Fabric guide linked above.
  2. Once the Fabric profile exists, open the Minecraft launcher, click "Installations", then click the folder icon on that profile.
  3. In the window that opens, select the mods folder.
  4. Drag and drop the Iris .jar file into that mods folder.
  5. Iris is now installed. Launch Minecraft and go to Options, then Video Settings. You should see a Shader Packs option.

Picking a Shader Pack

Iris does not ship a shader pack, it only loads them. Grab a pack that lists Iris or OptiFine compatibility and drop its .zip into the shaderpacks folder inside your .minecraft directory. Popular picks range from balanced all-rounders to highly customizable options to Iris-exclusive packs that use features OptiFine cannot match.

Compatibility Notes

Iris is incompatible with OptiFine, Canvas, and Vulkan mods, so do not run them alongside it. Resource packs that rely on core shaders also break under shader packs. Features OptiFine bundles, like zoom, connected textures, and custom entity models, come from separate Fabric mods instead, look into Zoomify, Continuity, and Entity Model Features for those. Skip Indium on current builds. Iris is Java Edition only and does not run on Bedrock or phones. If you are coming from OptiFine, our OptiFine install guide covers the older setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Sodium separately?

No. The Iris download bundles Sodium, so installing Iris gives you both. If you already run Sodium, you can use the Iris-only build, but most players just use the bundled version.

Can I use OptiFine shader packs with Iris?

Yes. Iris loads standard OptiFine shader packs plus Iris-enhanced packs that go beyond what OptiFine supports. That compatibility is the main reason most players switch.

Is Iris still being maintained?

The latest release landed in December 2025, so the project is actively updated. Check the project page for the current version and status before you install, since release cadence can shift between versions.

Does Iris work on servers?

Iris is client-side only. Servers do not need it, and you can join any vanilla or modded server with Iris running on your client.

What if my framerate drops?

Make sure Sodium is actually loaded, lower your shader pack's quality tier, and allocate enough RAM to the game. Most performance issues trace back to a heavy pack or a missing Sodium install.
