Bliss Shaders | Varying Light and Colored Lighting

Bliss Shaders is a big, highly customizable edit of Chocapic13's shaders, built around colored lighting that changes as you explore the world.

Load a world with Bliss for the first time and the light stops feeling static. Light sources tint the blocks around them with actual color, and the mood of a scene shifts with the time of day and the spot you are standing in. That idea drives the whole pack. Developer X0nk started from Chocapic13's shader and rebuilt it around one goal, a varying scene where the lighting is never quite the same whenever or wherever you are. What began as a way to learn shader development has since been downloaded roughly 12 million times.

Voxel Floodfill Colored Lighting

The signature feature is the voxel floodfill colored lighting, and the credits make it clear how much work went into it. Null built the system, which tracks light as it spreads through a space while carrying the color of its source. Different lights tint a room in different ways, and the glow stays in the space it fills instead of washing over everything at once. Keeping that light honest took a second round of effort. The README specifically thanks Emin and Gri573 for teaching the developer how to stop a lot of light leaking, one of the stubborn problems once you start coloring light per source. The payoff is interiors that feel lit by whatever is actually inside them. If that is the look you want, our post on Rethinking Voxels covers another pack built around colored light.

Shader Settings and Customization

Chocapic13's shader was already known for being customizable, and the README says X0nk liked that but wanted more. So the tweaking never really stopped. Bliss carries a stack of settings added over the course of development, which means you can reshape the look from the in-game menu instead of editing shader files by hand. The pack also includes a depth of field overhaul created by WoMspace, who the credits say spent a lot of time on it. That system is built for cinematic footage, where focus does a lot of the visual work. Between the settings and the camera effects, this is a pack you can keep adjusting long after install day.

Release, Stable, and Unstable Versions

Bliss develops in the open, and the README splits the project into three channels. Release versions are what you download from the official project page. They go up once a build has proven stable and collected enough changes, so they are deliberately not the very latest. Stable versions are newer, still reasonably dependable, and pushed out regularly for wider testing. Unstable versions are the absolute newest builds, updated very frequently, with bugs and missing features as the trade. If you want the cutting edge, the Unstable branch lives on GitHub, with a download guide in its README. Whichever channel you run, the developer asks testers to report what they find, either on the GitHub tracker or in the Discord server linked from the project page.

How to Install Bliss Shaders

Bliss is a shader pack, so it needs a shader loader to run. The project lists Iris as its requirement, and OptiFine might work as well, though Iris is the safer starting point.

  1. Install Iris and launch the game once so it sets up its folders. If you are starting from scratch, our guide to installing Iris walks through the whole process.
  2. Download the Bliss shader zip from the official project page. Do not unzip it.
  3. Drop the zip into the shaderpacks folder inside your .minecraft directory.
  4. In game, open Options, then Video Settings, then the Shader Packs screen.
  5. Select Bliss from the list, hit Apply, and load a world.

A few notes before you jump in. If you would rather run OptiFine, our OptiFine install guide covers that setup, but expect the pack to behave best on Iris since that is what the project lists first. Bliss is client-side only, so a multiplayer server needs nothing installed on its end. AMD, Intel, and Nvidia graphics are all supported. Apple devices have limited support because of OpenGL version restrictions, which the developer explains in more detail on the GitHub issue tracker.

Bliss Shaders FAQ

Does Bliss Shaders work on servers? It is a client-side pack. The project lists server support as unsupported, which for a shader just means the server side is not involved. Nothing gets installed on the server, and the rendering happens entirely on your machine.

Is Bliss Shaders still updated? The most recent update shipped in November 2025. Development also runs through the stable and unstable branches on GitHub, where the unstable branch gets the newest builds first.

Does Bliss Shaders run on Mac? Only with limits. Apple devices have limited support because of OpenGL version restrictions on that platform, and the developer keeps a thread on the GitHub issue tracker with the details.

How demanding is Bliss Shaders on performance? There is no honest single number to give. The cost depends on your graphics card and on the settings you pick, and the in-game settings menu is where you would tune heavier effects down. AMD, Intel, and Nvidia graphics are supported.

Give Bliss a spin if you want a world where the light actually changes from place to place. If it is not quite your style, Complementary Shaders leans realistic, while BSL Shaders runs brighter and more colorful.
