Complementary Shaders | Realistic Shaders
Complementary Shaders is a popular Minecraft shader pack by EminGT that reworks lighting, water, shadows and textures with profiles from Potato to Ultra.
Complementary Shaders is a long-running Minecraft shader pack from developer EminGT. It started life as an edit of BSL Shaders back in 2018 and later went through a complete rewrite, and today it ships as two sibling packs: Unbound, which leans into realism, and Reimagined, which keeps Minecraft's signature look while adding depth and atmosphere. Both scale from Potato up to Ultra, so the same pack can run on a weak laptop or a high-end rig.
What Complementary Shaders changes
The pack reworks the parts of Minecraft that matter most for atmosphere: lighting, shadows, water, and textures. Almost every block gets a custom effect rather than a generic shader pass, which is why grass, foliage, and metallic blocks each catch light differently. Water picks up real reflections, gentle waves, and transparency, and fog, god rays, and ambient occlusion give the world a sense of weight without obscuring gameplay.

EminGT has also targeted compatibility bugs that other shader packs leave broken, so visuals stay consistent when you stack mods that push the rendering engine in unusual directions.
Performance profiles and customization
Complementary Shaders ships with profiles ranging from Potato to Ultra, so you pick a preset that matches your hardware instead of tweaking dozens of sliders by hand. Every setting is still exposed in the Shader Options menu, which means you can dial back a specific effect, bump volumetric fog, or turn off a feature you do not like without changing profiles.

The project is shaped heavily by community feedback, and the default tuning reflects years of that back-and-forth.
Installing Complementary Shaders
The pack needs a shader loader, so install OptiFine or Iris first. Drop the shader zip into your shaderpacks folder, then select it from the in-game shader list. For a full walkthrough, our OptiFine install guide covers every step.
Picking between Unbound and Reimagined
The two packs share a codebase but aim at different looks. Unbound pushes toward realism, with harder shadows and richer materials. Reimagined preserves the vanilla Minecraft feel and is a good first stop if you want shaders that do not change the art direction. Complementary Shaders FAQ
Is Complementary Shaders still maintained? Yes. EminGT ships regular updates, with the latest release landing in May 2026.
Will it run on a weak PC? Start with the Potato profile. It is built for low-end hardware and still looks noticeably better than vanilla.
Unbound or Reimagined, which should I use? Pick Unbound for a realistic look, Reimagined if you want to keep Minecraft's original art style.
Can I use this with Iris or OptiFine? Both are supported as shader loaders. Install whichever you prefer, then load the pack from the shader menu.
