Minecraft oceans have always felt a little empty once you swim past the kelp and coral. The Rainbow Reef mod fixes that by populating warm waters with a colorful cast of real-life reef fish, then gives each catch a purpose through edible loot drops, decorative blocks, and ambient detailing. It is a Forge-based ocean expansion built around aquariums, coral reefs, and the creatures that live there.

Reef fish and sea creatures you will meet

The mod spawns a wide assortment of marine life across warm oceans, reefs, kelp forests, and mangrove swamps. Each mob has its own behavior, school size, and biome preference, so exploring the ocean actually feels rewarding. Many species also come in multiple color variants, with a few ultra-rare patterns for collectors to hunt.

Basslet

Basslets are tiny fish with striking, contrasting color patterns. They swim in small schools and dart between corals, and they come with one rare variant and an even rarer version for dedicated hunters.

Boxfish

Boxfish are built like little armored jewels, with a puffy hexagonal carapace and a clumsy, endearing swim style. They make a wonderful centerpiece for any home aquarium.

Butterflyfish

Butterflyfish glide on long, flowing fins, their bright white, yellow, and black patterns standing out against the reef. Killing one drops buttered butterflyfish toast for a quick energy boost.

Clownfish

A more detailed clownfish replaces the plain vanilla mob. These orange and white favorites are a reef aquarium staple, and their cupcake loot drop grants speed along with a poison effect when eaten.

Dwarf angelfish

Seahorses spawn in reefs and kelp forests. They swim vertically and curl their tails around blocks to anchor themselves, which makes them a charming addition to any tank.

Small sharks

Not a true reef species, small sharks spawn uncommonly near reefs and come in four variants. They are rare trophy catches for anglers looking for a challenge.

Rays

Reef rays are the rarest, most coveted catch in the mod. Their wide wingspan and graceful gliding motion make them a genuine event when one appears, and they have a single variant.

Tangs

Tang fish school together through kelp forests and warm oceans in yellow, blue, and other bright colors. Four ultra-rare patterned tangs exist for completionists.

Edible loot and combo meals

Beyond looking good, Rainbow Reef turns its fish into a proper food economy. Catching or killing a fish can drop an edible item, and most of these foods have a unique effect that fills a niche vanilla food does not.

Basslet cookies offer well-rounded nutrition. Boxfish bread is rumored to be the best food in the game. Butterflyfish toast is coated in butter for quick energy. Clownfish cupcakes grant speed, parrotfish punch gives absorption and regeneration, seahorse cures negative effects, and tangy soup grants glowing and water breathing. Pipefish sushi is the standout, restoring health directly without touching your hunger bar. Combo meals let you bundle several of these effects together, which is handy for long ocean expeditions or underwater building sessions.

Corals, blocks, and ambient decoration

The mod also adds decorative pieces to round out an ocean build. Coralstone, anemones, starfish, and pufferfish lanterns let you theme a base around the reef without reaching for other add-ons. The pufferfish lantern in particular works well as glowing ambient lighting for underwater halls. A custom music disc called Claw rounds out the atmosphere with a track suited to laid-back aquarium builds.

How to install Rainbow Reef

Rainbow Reef runs on Forge, so the setup is the standard Forge workflow.

1. Install the matching Forge loader for your game version.
2. Drop the downloaded JAR into your mods folder.

Does Rainbow Reef need any other mods to run?

No. An older release depended on GeckoLib, but the latest version removed that dependency, so you only need Forge itself.

Where do the fish spawn?
