Ryan's Zombies turns ordinary nighttime threats into something worth worrying about. The mod adds four new zombie variants and a bonus special mob, each one tougher than the vanilla zombie and each carrying loot that actually makes the fight worth taking. If the base game's shambling hordes feel too easy, this is a lightweight way to raise the stakes without overhauling your whole world.

Four zombie variants that change how you fight

Each variant has its own behavior, so you can't treat them all the same. The trick is learning which one to engage and which one to kite.

Brute

A large, tanky zombie with far more health than a normal one, so it can absorb a beating before it goes down. The reward for the effort is ancient debris, which is reason enough to pick this fight.

Blister

Faster and stronger than a regular zombie, but otherwise straightforward. The Blister drops fermented spider eyes, handy if you brew potions.

Crawler

A small, fast zombie that can climb walls. It is hard to hit but deals less damage than the other variants, so it is more annoying than lethal. The Crawler drops Nether quartz.

Spitter

A large zombie that fires projectiles at you from range. The projectiles hit hard, so breaking line of sight and closing the gap quickly is the way to deal with it. The Spitter drops slime blocks.

How to install Ryan's Zombies

Install your mod loader of choice (Fabric or Forge), then drop the matching JAR into your mods folder and launch the game. New to modding? Walk through the full how to install Minecraft mods guide first and you will not miss a step. The mod has no required dependencies beyond the loader itself, so setup stays simple.

How the new mobs fit into survival

The four variants spawn alongside regular zombies, so hostile mob nights get noticeably more dangerous. The Brute and Spitter are the real threats early on, while the Crawler's wall climbing can catch you off guard if you build above ground. Because each variant drops a different resource (ancient debris, fermented spider eyes, Nether quartz, slime blocks), hunting them on purpose is a genuine survival strategy rather than a chore. Pair the mod with something like Mowzie's Mobs for a broader hostile-mob overhaul, or keep it focused and add Zombie Horse Spawn if you want more undead variety.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ryan's Zombies still being maintained? The last release is from July 2023. The project has not been updated since, so check the project page for current status before relying on it for newer setups.

Does it need any other mods to run? No. Beyond the mod loader itself there are no required dependencies, so it is a single JAR drop-in.

Are the new zombies harder than vanilla zombies? Yes. Every variant has more health, more damage, or both, and the Spitter adds a ranged threat that vanilla zombies do not have.

Do they replace normal zombies? No. Regular zombies still spawn as usual, the four variants just add to the hostile mob pool.

Is the loot worth the risk? It can be. Ancient debris from the Brute is the standout, since it normally requires mining in the Nether. The other drops are useful for brewing and building.
