Sound Physics Remastered | Realistic Minecraft Audio

Sound Physics Remastered gives Minecraft real audio physics, so footsteps echo in caves, voices carry down tunnels, and stone walls muffle the sound.

Picture this. You crest a ridge above a deep ravine and a creeper hisses somewhere below you. In vanilla, that hiss arrives shaped by distance alone, with no echo off the ravine walls and no dulling from the stone between you and the fuse. Sound Physics Remastered runs game audio through a real sound model instead, so noise loses energy, bounces, and gets absorbed by the world around you. With around 56 million downloads, it is the kind of mod you hear the moment a world loads.

Cave Echoes, Muffled Walls, and Real Attenuation

The mod's core promise is realistic sound attenuation, reverberation, and absorption through blocks. In play, that splits into three reactions your ears will not let go of. Attenuation means distance and geometry change how sound arrives, so a mob a few blocks behind a wall is a different experience from the same mob a few blocks across open air. Absorption is the muffling itself, thick stone eating noise before it reaches you. Reverberation is the crowd pleaser, because enclosed spaces start to ring. Walk into a large cave, a mineshaft, or your own empty great hall, and the echo answers with timing that suits the room.

Bouncing matters as much as muffling. This fork is the version that got multiple bounces working, since the original could never bounce a sound more than once, even while it burned performance on that broken loop. Directional handling got reworked too. The sound engine now takes the source position and primary bounces into account when it decides where a noise comes from, and it processes from your camera position instead of your player position, so glancing toward a sound changes what you hear. Even sounds fired with the /playsound command respect the system now, which was broken in the original.

Credit where it belongs. Sonic Ether built the original Sound Physics, vlad2305m continued the project as Sound Physics Fabric, and this remastered fork picked up the torch with major speed and config work of its own. If you want more spaces worth echoing through, have a look at Alex's Caves, a mod that fills the underground with rare cave biomes.

Simple Voice Chat Support and Multiplayer Sound

The mod is explicitly optimized for use with Simple Voice Chat, and that is where it earns the biggest laughs in multiplayer. Practical translation, voices from other players pass through the same attenuation, occlusion, and reverb as everything else. A friend talking from a long tunnel sounds distant and muffled, someone standing at your campfire sounds close, and words do not cut through solid rock untouched.

Nothing chains you into that pairing though. The mod requires no dependencies at all, so you can add Simple Voice Chat without dragging a pile of libraries along, or skip it entirely and still get full physics on game audio. Server behavior is relaxed as well. The client side of the mod is the required part, the server side is only optional, so a multiplayer server does not need to install anything for you to hear the difference.

Performance, Debug Tools, and Config Settings

The headline improvement is speed. The fork improved sound processing performance by a factor of 10 over the original, which matters when every audible event gets checked against the block geometry around it. It also retuned the default config values, so things behave sensibly the moment you drop it in.

Config got real attention too. You get an improved configuration UI, Cloth Config was made optional, and reflectivity is now adjustable straight from the config GUI. Occlusion variation and a block occlusion factor sit alongside it, giving you control over how strongly the world shapes what you hear. The recommended companion mods are ModMenu and Cloth Config, nice to have for the friendlier menus, but nothing about them is required.

Tinkerers get toys here. Flip on the debug sound bounce renderer or the debug occlusion renderer and you can see how the system is treating a given spot, handy for tuning a build or understanding why a reverb comes out the way it does. If you want physics you can see as well as hear, our Physics Mod post covers ragdolls and destruction on the visual side.

How to Install Sound Physics Remastered

  1. Install a mod loader first. Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt are all supported, so use whichever your instance already runs.
  2. Download Sound Physics Remastered from the official project page. Grab the file that matches your loader.
  3. Drop the file into the mods folder of your instance. Create that folder if it does not exist yet.
  4. Add the recommended extras if you want them. ModMenu and Cloth Config make the config side friendlier, but the mod runs fine with neither.
  5. Install Simple Voice Chat too if you plan to use voice with friends, since this mod is tuned for it.
  6. Load a world and open the config screen. Adjust reflectivity and the block occlusion factor until caves sound the way you like.

Sound Physics Remastered FAQ

Does Sound Physics Remastered need to be on the server? No. The client side is required and the server side is optional, since your game handles the sound processing. The server does not have to install anything.

Can I use Sound Physics Remastered with Simple Voice Chat? Yes, and that pairing is the point of the fork. It is optimized specifically for Simple Voice Chat, so voice audio gets the same attenuation, occlusion, and reverb as game sounds.

How much performance does Sound Physics Remastered use? Less than its history suggests. This fork improved sound processing performance by a factor of 10 over the original, and it fixed old bugs where broken sound bouncing wasted cycles. That speedup is a big reason the fork exists.

Is Sound Physics Remastered still updated? Yes, the project is active, with its most recent update released in October 2026.
