Iron's RPG Tweaks turns vanilla Minecraft into a more deliberate, RPG-flavoured survival experience. Instead of one sweeping overhaul, the mod ships as independent modules you toggle on or off per world through the in-game config. Keep what fits your pack and ignore what does not. That modular design is exactly why it shows up in so many adventure and progression modpacks.

What the Modules Actually Do

Each module rewrites one narrow slice of vanilla behaviour. You can run them all or pick a handful.

Combat Module

The headliner removes damage ticks, the brief invulnerability frames that fire after a player or mob takes a hit. With them gone, multiple attackers finally land hits together instead of trading tick immunity. This shines in multiplayer and in packs built around attribute progression. The module also lets you tune knockback, attack strength, and whether partially-charged swings deal any damage at all.

XP Module

Death drops an XP Catalyst instead of the usual trickle of levels. Walk back to it and claim it for the full amount of lost experience, every point accounted for. The module can ignore keepInventory so dying still stings even on rules-light servers, which restores real stakes to survival runs.

Enchanting Module

This is a legacy module from earlier versions, kept around for older worlds. Found enchantments on looted or mob-dropped gear arrive hidden, written in their original Standard Galactic text until you identify them. Reveal the effects by crafting and using a Scroll of Identification, by equipping armour at your own risk, or by right-clicking an enchanting table with the mystery item.

Durability Module

Vanilla wear-and-tear gets switched off here, replaced by durability loss applied to your equipped gear when you die. Your pickaxe never chips from mining and your sword never dulls from swinging, but a string of deaths can still ruin a full kit. It is a quality-of-life change that keeps gear repair meaningful without punishing normal play.

Hunger and Sleep Modules

The Hunger Module strips out the vanilla hunger bar and makes food heal you directly, with extra toggles for natural regeneration, consume times, and sprinting rules. The Sleep Module stops beds from skipping the night outright until you reach a Drowsy state, which you can brew into a potion from any leaf. Both push you toward more considered survival choices instead of the usual routine.

How to Set Up Iron's RPG Tweaks

This is a Forge and NeoForge mod, so install the matching loader for your Minecraft version first. Grab the correct JAR and drop it into your mods folder, then launch the game once so the config generates. Open the in-game config editor from there, since most of the value comes from dialling each module to taste rather than running defaults.

For the broader steps around loaders and mod folders, our how to install Minecraft mods walkthrough covers the basics, and the NeoForge project guide explains that loader specifically.

Pairing It With Other RPG Mods

Because every module is optional, Iron's RPG Tweaks layers cleanly over combat and magic overhauls. It pairs naturally with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks from the same author, and the Combat Module sits well alongside something like Better Combat when you want attack animations to match the new damage rules. Pick the modules that complement your other content and leave the rest off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to enable every module?

No. Each module is independent and can be turned on or off entirely through the per-world config. You can run just the Combat Module, or stack several together.

Does it work on servers?

Yes. The mod runs on both client and server, and much of the config is server-side, so you tune behaviour per world rather than per player.

Can the XP Catalyst be lost or stolen?

If you die again before reclaiming a previous Catalyst, you risk losing that earlier experience pool. The system is designed to make recovery a deliberate trip, not a free teleport back to your levels.

Is Iron's RPG Tweaks still maintained?

Yes. The project received fresh releases in June 2026, including builds for recent Minecraft versions, so it stays current alongside the author's other mods. Check the project page for the latest files if you want the newest build.
