Angling is a Minecraft mod that reworks fishing into something you can actually tend and grow. Instead of casting a line and hoping for cod, you dig worms out of the dirt, feed them to exotic fish, and raise generations of fry in tanks you build yourself. The result is a calmer, more hands-on take on Minecraft fishing that pairs well with underwater builds like underwater villages.

Dig Up Worms for Breeding

Worms are the foundation of the whole breeding loop. Up to three can hide inside a single block. You find them by spotting a grass block that throws particles, then breaking the block underneath it. To restock, bury worms in the ground and wait a short while for them to multiply.

Breed Fish Through Roe

Angling ties fish breeding to a new item called roe. Feed compatible fish species worms (or algae in some cases) and they produce roe instead of just swimming around. Each hatch is a small event you can plan for.

When roe hatches, a new generation called fry is born. Fry inherit the distinctive colors and patterns of their parents, so selective breeding is a real (if slow) goal. The attention to detail here is what turns a simple tank into a hobby worth returning to.

Clams and Oysters Filter Algae

Fish that have been bred spawn algae, and unchecked algae would choke a tank fast. Clams and oysters solve this. Drop them in as filter feeders and they devour algae growth automatically, which keeps the water clear and leaves more room for roe to be placed.

The Pelican, Wandering Fish Trader

The pelican is the wandering trader of fish. Step out into sunlight holding a bucket of fish and this curious bird may appear. It spawns with a random fish already in its beak, and it sticks around until you trade with it. Think of it as a mobile way to swap fish you do not want for ones you do.

How to Install Angling

Angling runs on Fabric, so set up the Fabric loader first. The mod also depends on Fabric API and GeckoLib for its animations, so both need to sit in your mods folder alongside Angling itself. If you want a general walkthrough, see our guide to installing Minecraft mods.

The mod is required on both client and server, so add it to a dedicated server the same way you add it to your client. Drop every JAR into the mods folder, select your Fabric profile, and launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Angling work on Forge or NeoForge?

No. Angling is a Fabric-only mod, so it loads through the Fabric loader and the Fabric API. There is no Forge or NeoForge build.

Do I need any dependencies?

Yes. You need the Fabric API and GeckoLib installed for Angling to load and render its mobs. Both are common Fabric dependencies.

Is the mod required on the server too?

Yes. Angling runs in both client and server environments, so a multiplayer server needs the same JARs in its mods folder that players have locally.

Can every fish be bred?

Most can, but not all. Fish bred with worms include sunfish, crab, catfish, bubble eye, anglerfish, mahi mahi, anomalocaris, and dongfish. Sea slugs are bred with algae instead. The pelican, fry, nautilus, and seahorse are not bred through the worm or algae loop.

Where do I report bugs or follow development?
