What the Better Archeology Mod Adds

Vanilla archeology from the Trails and Tales update is a fun first taste, but the brush and suspicious sand only go so far. The Better Archeology mod picks up where Mojang left off and turns digging into a full exploration loop. You hunt for buried structures, brush out artifact shards, reconstruct ancient skeletons, and trade relics with a dedicated villager. The whole archeology workflow is deeper, riskier, and far more rewarding.

Artifact Shards and the Archeology Table

The centerpiece of the mod is the artifact system. Breaking pots and brushing suspicious sand drops Artifact Shards. Collect enough of them and you can craft an Unidentified Artifact. That item is useless on its own, so you bring it to an Archeology Table, where it gets analyzed and reveals its true identity.

Identified artifacts grant powerful enchantments you cannot get anywhere else. Tunneling lets you break the block beneath the one you are mining, which is a huge time saver underground. Soaring Winds gives you a boost while gliding with an Elytra. Each artifact becomes a reason to keep digging.

New Blocks Worth Brushing

The mod adds a handful of decorative and functional blocks tied to the dig theme. Fossiliferous Dirt is the big one, since brushing it is how you uncover fossil parts out in the wild. Rotten Wood shows up inside ancient structures and gives those ruins a weathered, abandoned look. Mud Brick variants round out the set and give builders more material to work with for temples and dig sites.

Reconstructing Ancient Fossils

Fossils are complete skeletons of long gone creatures, and finding them is one of the more satisfying loops in the mod. You locate a fossil site, brush the Fossiliferous Dirt around it, and slowly collect every bone. Once all the parts are gathered you assemble them into a full skeleton that doubles as a decoration piece.

Some fossils do more than sit there. The Sheep Fossil can be tuned like an instrument and activated as a noteblock to play Goat Horn sounds, which makes a finished dig site feel alive rather than empty.

Totems, Brushes, and Rusty Bombs

The item pool gets several meaningful additions. The Totem of Souls siphons soul energy from enemies you fight, which rewards aggressive players. The Totem of Torrents lets you dash like a riptide trident, handy for crossing water or dodging in combat. Brushes are your main excavation tool and the key to uncovering both fossils and artifacts. Rusty Bombs are throwable explosives that work for clearing terrain, opening fights, or defending a dig site.

The Archeologist Villager

A new villager profession joins the roster, the Archeologist. He is obsessed with the lost structures of the world and trades relics and artifacts picked up on his own expeditions. This gives you a steady way to offload duplicates and a reason to keep an emerald reserve for the rare pieces he brings back.

Structures, Traps, and Loot

Exploration gets a real payoff thanks to the new structures the mod scatters across the world. Each one is built around archeology and tends to hide fossils, traps, and loot behind its walls. Some ruins are rigged with old mechanisms that still fire, so you want to move carefully instead of rushing straight for the chest.

How to Install Better Archeology

The mod has no required dependencies, which keeps setup simple. The steps are the same regardless of which loader you run.

  1. Install a compatible mod loader first. If you are new to modded Minecraft, our Minecraft Fabric and Minecraft Forge guides walk through the basics, and the general how to install Minecraft mods overview covers the shared steps for every loader.
  2. Download the Better Archeology JAR that matches your loader and Minecraft version.
  3. Drop the JAR into your game's mods folder.
  4. Launch the game and start hunting for dig sites.

If anything in the mod confuses you, the project's own wiki covers blocks, artifacts, and configuration in depth.

Better Archeology FAQ

Is Better Archeology safe for an existing world?

Yes. The mod adds content on top of vanilla systems rather than rewriting them, so dropping it into a world you already play is low risk. As with any content mod, keep a backup before you add it to a long term survival save.

Does it need any other mods to run?

No. The mod lists no required dependencies. You only need a supported mod loader and the correct Minecraft version, both of which the compatibility table on this page shows automatically.

Can I use it on a server?

It runs in a client and server environment, so it works on multiplayer servers. Make sure every player has the mod installed and that the server is running a compatible loader.

How does the Archeology Table actually work?

You bring an Unidentified Artifact to the table and analyze it there. The table reveals what the artifact is and unlocks the enchantment or effect tied to it. It is the bridge between collecting shards and getting a usable reward.

Where do I find fossils and artifacts?

Both come from the new structures the mod generates and from brushing Fossiliferous Dirt at dig sites. Exploration is the core loop, so the more ruins you raid, the more complete your collection becomes.
