Tiered chests and barrels that hold far more than vanilla

Expanded Storage is a Minecraft mod built around one idea, giving you storage blocks that scale well beyond the 27-stack vanilla chest. It adds chests, classic chests, barrels, and mini storage blocks in a ladder of material tiers from wooden all the way up to netherite. Each tier raises the slot count, so a single block can replace a wall of double chests and keep your base tidy.

A standard wooden chest matches vanilla at 27 stacks. Climb the tiers and the capacity grows fast. Copper holds 45, iron holds 54, golden holds 81, diamond and obsidian hold 108, and netherite tops out at 135 stacks in one block. That makes the mod a natural fit for mob farms, ore processing setups, and any base where the loot outgrows the room you built for it.

The material choice is not just cosmetic. Golden chests are liked by piglins, so piglins will not attack you when you open one nearby. Obsidian and netherite chests are blast-proof, and netherite is also fire-resistant, which makes them a solid pick for storing valuables in risky areas. Classic chests skip the opening animation entirely, which helps FPS when you pack dozens of containers into a single storage hall.

Modeled chests that merge in any direction

The modeled chests behave like vanilla chests but with a twist you will notice the moment you place two of them. They can merge along any axis, so instead of only forming long double chests you can stack them into tall and wide double chests too. That flexibility lets you fit more storage into tight floorplans and build cleaner sorting walls.

Themes that go beyond plain wood

Wooden chests come in several themed variants, so the lowest tier still has personality.

• Pumpkin, built from pumpkin blocks.
• Present, with gift-wrap textures that change by variant.
• Bamboo, built from bamboo.
• Moss, built from moss and bone-mealable so it can spread over nearby surfaces.

Mini storage blocks for gifts and decoration

Mini chests and barrels share the same material lineup as their larger counterparts but hold only a single stack. They are compact, decorative, and handy for handing an item to another player or labeling a single-resource pickup point on a farm.

Two tools handle the in-world management so you do not have to break and replace blocks by hand.

Storage Mutator

The Storage Mutator is one item with four modes. It can merge adjacent chests into a double chest, split a double chest back into singles, rotate a storage block, and swap a container to a different theme within the same tier. One small bonus, renaming the tool to "Sparrow" unlocks extra mini storage styles.

Conversion kits

Conversion kits upgrade an already-placed container to a higher tier. Apply the right kit to a wooden chest and it becomes a netherite chest without losing its contents, which saves you from emptying and rebuilding a storage hall just to raise capacity.

Installing Expanded Storage

Installation is the standard mod workflow. Install Fabric, Quilt, or NeoForge first, then drop the matching JAR into your mods folder. If you want recipe hints inside your inventory, run a recipe viewer like EMI, JEI, or REI alongside it. None of those are required, they just make the kits and mutator easier to craft. Is Expanded Storage still maintained?

The last release shipped in June 2026, so the project is actively updated. Check the project page for the current status before starting a new world that depends on it.

Does it need any other mods to run?

No required dependencies. A recipe viewer like EMI, JEI, or REI is recommended so you can see the conversion kit and mutator recipes, but the mod works without one.

Are the high-tier chests safe from explosions?

Obsidian and netherite chests are blast-proof, and netherite chests are also fire-resistant. Lower tiers break like normal storage blocks, so keep them away from creepers and TNT.

Can I upgrade a chest without emptying it first?

Yes. Apply a conversion kit to a placed container and it moves up a tier while keeping its contents, which is the main reason to keep kits stocked near a sorting system.

Will it lag a large storage room?

Classic chests and barrels skip the block-entity renderer and opening animation, so they are the better pick when you pack hundreds of containers into one room.
