Reign of Nether RTS | Real-Time Strategy Mod
Reign of Nether RTS turns Minecraft into a real-time strategy game with three factions, resource economy, and army combat. Build bases and conquer the map.
Reign of Nether RTS reimagines Minecraft as a classic real-time strategy game in the spirit of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Age of Empires. You gather resources, raise a base, train an army, and fight large-scale battles inside the blocky world you already know. It is a Forge mod built for both single-player and multiplayer, and it plays nothing like vanilla survival.
If you want a primer on adding mods like this one to your game, our guide to installing Minecraft mods covers the folder structure and basics.
Three Factions With Distinct Playstyles
The mod hands you a choice of three armies, and each one plays by its own rules. Picking a faction is the first real strategic decision you make.
Villagers and Illagers, An Unlikely Alliance
Villagers and Illagers have teamed up to defend the overworld. This faction blends the craftsmanship of villagers with the combat experience of Illagers, giving you a balanced army that hits a middle ground between economy and aggression. They are a solid pick while you learn the ropes.

Piglins Expand the Nether Into the Overworld
Piglins push outward from the Nether and reshape whatever they touch. They can only build on Nether terrain, but as they advance they convert overworld blocks into hostile Nether equivalents. That makes them a snowball faction, dangerous the longer a match runs and the more ground they claim.

Monsters, Strongest After Dark
The Monsters faction unites undead, spiders, and other night dwellers under one banner. These units hit hardest in darkness, so timing your attacks around the day and night cycle matters far more here than with the other two armies.

Economy and Unit Control
Three resources drive every match: food, wood, and ore. Workers collect them automatically from farms, ore deposits, and trees, but you still have to decide where to spend and when to expand. A booming economy funds a bigger army, and a bigger army wins the map.

Gathering is only half the job. You also need real RTS controls to keep your forces organized. Box selection, attack moves, and control groups all work the way genre veterans expect, so you can pull off focused fire, retreats, and multi-pronged pushes without fumbling.

Multiplayer Matches and How Victory Works
Multiplayer is where Reign of Nether RTS shines. A match ends when only one player is left standing, which happens when an opponent loses their buildings or surrenders. Setting clear victory conditions up front and adapting as the map unfolds is what separates a win from an early exit. Whether you queue with friends or strangers, every battle rewards quick decisions layered on top of long-term planning.

Learning the Ropes With the Tutorial Map and Datapack
New to RTS games or just new to this mod? The bundled reign_of_nether_tutorial map walks you through the core loop of gathering, building, and fighting. The worldgen datapack that ships with it is tuned for strategy play, removing underground structures, surfacing ores, and speeding up farming and tree decay so matches stay focused on combat.

Fog of War, Performance, and Shader Compatibility
Fog of War is an experimental feature that greys out any chunk outside the range of your units and buildings, forcing you to scout like you would in a classic RTS. Toggle it with the /rts-fog command. Because it is still flagged experimental, it can drag on performance. Avoid flipping it on or off mid-match, and lower your render distance if frames drop. Notably, OptiFine is not compatible with Fog of War and will crash the game if both are active.

On the visuals side, the mod plays nicely with shaders through Oculus and Embeddium, so your battles can look as good as they play.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Reign of Nether RTS still being maintained? Yes. The project is active, with the latest release dated June 2026. Check the project page for the current version before installing.
Can I play it with friends? Absolutely. Multiplayer is a core focus, with PvP matches and community-made maps supporting anywhere from two to six players. Dedicated server settings are recommended for the smoothest experience.
Do I need any other mods for it to run? No required dependencies. You only need the correct Forge loader and the Reign of Nether JAR. Oculus or Embeddium are optional if you want shaders.
Why does the game crash when I enable Fog of War? Fog of War is experimental and conflicts with OptiFine. Remove OptiFine before turning it on, and avoid toggling fog during an active match.
How do I learn the controls?
Type /rts-help in game for the full list of commands and controls, or load the tutorial map to practice gathering, building, and combat in a guided setting.
