Better Combat | Minecraft Dungeons Melee Mod
Better Combat brings the melee system from Minecraft Dungeons into Java Edition with weapon combos, dual wielding, and fluid attack animations.
What Better Combat Changes About Melee
Vanilla sword swings feel weightless and identical no matter what you hold. Better Combat fixes that by borrowing the melee system from Minecraft Dungeons, giving every weapon a real upswing, a distinct animation, and a reason to care which blade you equip. Swords, axes, and tridents stop being stat sticks and start feeling like actual tools of war.
The mod layers on weapon combos, dual wielding, smarter collision, and a reworked Sweeping Edge, so each fight becomes a string of decisions instead of a single repeated click.
Fancy Attack Animations Per Weapon
Every weapon gets its own swing. A one-handed stab, a heavy slam, a wide slash, all mapped to the weapon in your hand rather than a generic animation shared across the hotbar.

Accurate Weapon Collision Detection
Pixel hunting is over. You swing, and the blade connects with whatever sits in its arc, which means no more ghost swings because your cursor drifted a few pixels off the creeper. The precise hitboxes also make third-person view genuinely playable for combat, since landing hits no longer depends on aiming a crosshair at a single point.

Weapon Combos and Chained Attacks
Certain weapons cycle through a sequence of swings instead of repeating one motion. Chain those hits together and the combo builds into something far more devastating than a vanilla spam-click, rewarding timing and weapon choice over raw click speed.

Dual Wield Any One-Handed Weapons
Hold a weapon in each hand and the attack hotkey alternates between your main-hand and off-hand strikes. Any pair of one-handed weapons works, so you can mix a sword and an axe, or two matching blades, and the mod handles the timing for you.

Hold to Attack and Configurable Behavior
Hold the attack hotkey and your character auto-swings on cooldown instead of demanding a click per hit. It is configurable, along with plenty of other quality of life toggles like whether you can swing through grass and zero-hardness blocks instead of mining them.

Add Compatibility to Any Weapon
Weapons shipped without an attribute file get auto-assigned a matching preset based on their item ID, so most add-on weapons work out of the box. Want custom behavior on a specific item? You can define it with JSON data files, which is how partnered weapon packs hook in. One example worth pairing it with is TugkanDeMan's Weaponry.

How to Install Better Combat
Getting it running follows the usual mod workflow. Pick the loader your pack already uses, since this mod ships separate builds for each.
- Install your loader of choice. If you are starting fresh, our Minecraft Fabric and general mod install guides walk through the setup.
- Download the Better Combat JAR plus its two required libraries, Cloth Config and playerAnimator, for the same loader and game version.
- Drop all three files into your
modsfolder and launch the game.
Client-side settings live in the Mod Menu on Fabric, or under Main Menu then Mods then Better Combat then Config on Forge. Server-side options sit in config/bettercombat/server.json5 and sync to clients when they join.
Better Combat FAQ
Do I need other mods for it to work? Yes. Cloth Config and playerAnimator are both required, and the game will not load the mod without them. Grab the builds that match your loader and game version.
Can I use it on a server? You can. It runs as both client and server, and server-side settings synchronize to players automatically when they connect.
Does it work with my favorite weapon mods? Most weapons get an auto-assigned preset, and several packs like Simply Swords, MedievalWeapons, and Mythic Metals ship dedicated compatibility. Anything else can be tuned through JSON data files.
Is it compatible with other combat overhauls? Mods that rewrite the same mechanics, particularly other dual-wielding systems, will clash. It plays nicely with content and weapon mods that leave melee behavior alone.
Is Better Combat still maintained? The latest release shipped in early 2026, so the project stays current. Check the project page for the newest build before you install.
