Roost Re-hatched Mod | Bird Mount & Gliding
Roost Re-hatched is a Minecraft mod that adds a fast flightless bird mount you can tame, ride, and glide across the Overworld with for quick travel.
Meet the Roost, a fast flightless bird mount
The Roost is an ancient flightless bird that the mod positions as a middle ground between a horse and an elytra. It sprints without tiring, drifts through the air for around ten seconds before it has to land, and takes no fall damage at all. That combination makes it a handy way to cross rough terrain early on, before you have reliable flight sorted.
Lore-wise the species was brought back through Illager experiments, which also explains the hostile riders you will run into later.

Taming a Roost with Grubs
To win one over you need Grubs, crawlies that hide under flat stones scattered across the Overworld. Flip enough rocks and you will collect a stash. Feed a wild Roost its favorite snack and it will start following you on expeditions as a loyal mount.

Roost Riders and their outposts
The Illagers have not just revived the species, they have weaponized it. Roost Rider Outposts are guarded by trained Roost Riders mounted on their own birds, and they hit hard with long-reaching Glaive weapons during raids. Move carefully, because their reach lets them strike from much further than a normal mob.
Beat a rider and you have a chance to loot a rare Roost Egg. Place the egg and wait about twenty minutes for it to hatch into a baby Roost you can tame from scratch.

Items, blocks, and protective charms
Beyond the mob itself the mod adds a small toolkit that supports taming, breeding, and survival.
Grubs are crawlies found by flipping flat stones in the Overworld. They are the Roost's favorite food and the key to taming one.

Grub Salad is crafted from grubs and fed to a Roost to make it lay an egg. It works on other egg-laying mobs too, including Sniffers and Chickens.

Roost Whistle (also called the command whistle) lets you order tamed Roosts to sit or follow. As of the 1.1.0 update it can also recall a Roost back to a nest block bound to it, so you can send your bird home from a distance.

Roost Egg is rarely looted from Rider outposts or dropped by a Roost fed Grub Salad. Place it and after about twenty minutes it hatches a tameable baby Roost.

Featherlite Charm negates lethal fall damage while held, with a short thirty-second cooldown between uses. Keep one in your hotbar near tall cliffs.

Voidlite Charm sits in your offhand and saves you from the Void once, teleporting you back to the last solid block you stood on. In update 1.1.0 its recipe switched from diamonds to opals.

Opal and Opaline Glass
Opal is a gemstone mined deep underground and it anchors most Roost-based crafting recipes. Opaline Glass is the decorative block built from it, giving you a tidy way to theme a base around the mod's palette.
How to install Roost Re-hatched
The setup is the standard mod install flow. Install your loader of choice, drop the JAR into your mods folder, and launch the game. You will also need Geckolib installed, since the mod depends on it for animation. For a full walkthrough of the folder and loader step, see our how to install Minecraft mods guide.
Compatibility notes
The mod plays nicely with several popular additions. It works with Better Combat out of the box, and with a datapack it also supports Epic Fight. As of update 1.1.0 it has partial Create compatibility, adding a few recipes that tie into Create's systems. Pair it with Duckling or Critters and Companions if you want a busier, more lived-in Overworld full of new creatures.
Roost Re-hatched FAQ
Is Roost Re-hatched still being maintained?
The last release is Roost 1.1.0 from March 2024. The author noted at the time that the mod would be updated when necessary, so check the project page for any newer builds before you build around it.
Can I ride a Roost like a horse?
Yes. The Roost is built as a mount that fills the gap between horse travel and elytra flight. You can sprint on one indefinitely and use its short glide to cross gaps.
Where do I find Grubs?
Flip the flat stones that generate across the Overworld. Grubs hide underneath them, and they are the only food that tames a wild Roost.
How do Roost Eggs work?
You can loot them rarely from Rider outposts or get one by feeding a tamed Roost a Grub Salad. Place the egg and it hatches into a baby Roost after about twenty minutes.
Does the mod need any other mods to run?
Only Geckolib, which handles the bird animations. Better Combat and Epic Fight support is optional.
