MineFortress RTS reimagines Minecraft as a real-time strategy game. Instead of mining block by block in first person, you step back into a godlike top-down view and command a whole village of pawns. You point, they work. That single shift turns survival into colony management, where every gather, build, and battle happens at your direction.

Command Your Colony From a Top-Down View

The headline change is the camera. MineFortress drops the first-person perspective and hands you an orthographic, top-down viewpoint that feels straight out of classic RTS games like Age of Empires. Your mouse pointer becomes the tool for everything. You select workers, designate dig areas, queue builds, and pan across the map without ever swinging a pickaxe yourself.

Gather Resources and Hire Specialized Workers

A working economy sits at the center of the experience. Your villagers fan out to collect wood, stone, and food, and those materials become the currency you spend to grow. Stack up enough resources and you can hire professionals with specialized roles like farmers, foresters, blacksmiths, fishermen, and miners. Each profession keeps a different part of the settlement running, so balancing your workforce matters.

Build Custom Structures With the Blueprint System

Blueprints are where the creative side opens up. You can drop in the bundled medieval plans to expand quickly, or design your own custom buildings and add them to the village roster. Finishing blueprints also feeds the progression loop, since new structures unlock additional professions and let you bring in more villagers.

Upgradable buildings push things further. As your settlement matures you can improve structures to produce more and unlock better options, growing a cluster of huts into a genuine fortress.

Train Warriors and Raid Neighboring Settlements

Once your economy is humming, you can pivot to the military layer. Hire warriors, rally them to the campfire, and march on rival camps in RTS-style combat. Managing your troop count and timing decides whether a raid pays off, so combat sits on top of the same resource economy rather than replacing it.

Keep Villagers Fed and Productive

Your pawns are not mindless drones. A hunger system means workers break to eat, and they slow down when food runs low rather than simply dropping dead. Keeping a steady food supply is part of the management loop, and the mod is designed to expand this layer with mood and deeper character stats over time.

How to Start Your First Fortress

Getting going takes a minute. When you create a world, pick the dedicated "Fortress" gamemode, or switch an existing world with the /gamemode fortress command.

Right-click to place a campfire, which acts as the heart of your village and anchors the rest of the systems.

The core controls are mouse-driven and quick to learn. Left-click once to start selecting a dig area, then left-click again to confirm it. Right-click while holding a block to start a build selection, and right-click again to confirm. Hold sprint (Ctrl by default) and move the mouse to pan the camera across the map.

Because the mod runs on Fabric, you will want a Fabric setup ready before you drop the jar in your mods folder. If you are new to adding mods in general, our guide to installing Minecraft mods walks through the full process. The mod plays nicely with other settlement and building focused projects, so it is worth pairing with something like the ChoiceTheorems Overhauled Village mod or an Effortless Building setup for faster construction.

MineFortress RTS FAQ

Is MineFortress RTS multiplayer?

Yes. Multiplayer support was added back in the 1.8.3 beta and has stuck around since, so you can run a colony with friends on a Fabric server.

Do I need to play in a special gamemode?

You do. The mod adds a "Fortress" gamemode that unlocks the RTS camera and villager controls. Pick it during world creation or run /gamemode fortress to switch into it.

What does the campfire do?

The campfire is the anchor of your village. Placing one is the first thing you do in a new Fortress world, and the fortress logic runs through it, so protect it.

Is the project still being updated?

The most recent release shipped in July 2025, and the source repo stays open for issues and contributions. Check the project page for the current status before you build a long-term world around it.
