UMU Backpack | Wearable Pet-Carrying Mod
UMU Backpack Mod adds a wearable backpack you open with the B key, plus enchantments that expand its slots and let you carry small pets on your back.
A modern, lightweight backpack that frees your hands while you explore. Equip it in the chestplate slot, press B to open the inventory, and dye it any color to match the rest of your gear. Three custom enchantments turn it from a simple carry bag into a tool for extra storage, defense, and even transporting small animals.
Crafting the Backpack
The recipe keeps the backpack cheap enough to craft early, while the shulker shell gates it behind a trip to the End. You need four leather, two rabbit leather, one gold ingot, and one shulker shell.

Once crafted, you can dye the backpack by combining it with any dye in a crafting grid. The color is purely cosmetic, so pick whatever suits your build.

Equipping and Opening the Backpack
The backpack goes in your chestplate slot, so you trade a piece of armor for extra carry space. With it equipped, press the B key to open the inventory. The default bag holds nine slots, and you cannot remove the backpack while it still contains items. That is a deliberate balance choice that stops you from dropping a full bag on death and keeps the slot trade meaningful.

Enchanting Your Backpack
UMU Backpack adds three enchantments built specifically for the bag. Each one changes how the backpack plays, so you can spec it toward storage, survival, or transport.
Cram
Cram increases the backpack's slot count by 45 per level. At max level four you get the full 54 slots, turning a small carry bag into a walking chest.

Back Protection
Back Protection cuts the damage you take from behind while wearing the backpack. It maxes out at level four and does not conflict with other resistance enchantments, so you can stack it with your usual armor buffs.

Load
Load changes what the backpack does entirely. Instead of opening an inventory, it lets you pick up and carry small animals like chickens, cats, and rabbits inside the bag. It is the most distinctive part of the mod and the easiest way to relocate pets without leads or minecarts.

Installing UMU Backpack on Fabric
UMU Backpack is a Fabric mod, so start by installing Fabric Loader. The mod depends on Fabric API, so grab that jar as well and drop both files into your Minecraft mods folder. If you want a full walkthrough of the folder and profile setup, see our guide on how to install Minecraft mods.
Because the backpack works as a wearable item with custom behavior, it needs to be installed on both the client and the server. A vanilla client connecting to a server running the mod will not see the backpack behavior correctly, so make sure everyone is on the same setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open the backpack?
Equip it in the chestplate slot and press the B key. You can rebind that key in the controls menu if B conflicts with another mod.
Can I take the backpack off while it has items inside?
No. The backpack locks into the slot while it contains anything, which prevents you from accidentally dropping a full bag on death.
What does the Load enchantment actually do?
Load replaces the inventory open with a capture action, letting you store small animals like chickens, cats, and rabbits in the bag and carry them with you.
Does the backpack replace my chestplate?
Yes. The backpack sits in the chestplate slot, so you give up chest armor in exchange for the extra storage and the enchantment benefits.
Can I use the backpack on a multiplayer server?
Yes, as long as both the server and every client have the mod and Fabric API installed. The backpack behavior is handled on both sides, so a mismatched setup will not work correctly.
