Building Wands | Multi-Mode Building Mod
Building Wands is a Minecraft mod that places, destroys, and replaces hundreds of blocks at once with fourteen placement modes for faster construction.
Building Wands is a building and terraforming tool that lets you place, destroy, and replace large volumes of blocks in a single action. Instead of laying one block at a time, you aim a wand, pick a mode, and watch walls, rows, circles, and grids appear instantly. It pairs creative freedom with a balanced survival cost, so it scales from free building in creative to careful, resource-aware work in survival.
Opening the Wand Menu and Switching Modes
The wand has a lot of keybindings, so the cleanest way in is the wand menu.

The default menu key is Y. Open it and every option sits in one place rather than scattered across a dozen hotkeys you have to memorize.

From there you cycle through the modes. Press V to swap modes on the fly and X to flip a mode's orientation.
Directional Placement
Directional mode places a single block in any of nine directions from the block you target. Use it to extend a structure one block at a time in a precise direction without fumbling for the right face.

Row and Column Construction
Row and column mode drops a full line of blocks at once. Press X to toggle between a horizontal row and a vertical column, which makes walls, pillars, and towers fast to lay out.

Fill and Area Fill
There are two fill modes. Standard fill takes two corners you define and floods the volume between them, either with one block type or a randomized mix. Area fill is smarter, it detects connected empty spaces and fills only those, so it is ideal for patching holes and gaps inside an existing build.

Grid Layouts
Grid mode stamps a fixed 2D grid of blocks. Adjust the dimensions with the arrow keys or through the GUI, which is handy for floors, ceilings, and modular patterns where spacing has to stay even.

Lines Between Two Points
Line mode draws a straight run of blocks from one point to another. It is the go-to for bridges, paths, pipes, and any connection that needs to span a gap cleanly.

Circles From a Center Point
Circle mode builds a circle from a center block out to a radius block you choose. Press K to toggle between a hollow ring and a filled disc, so you get curves for arenas, towers, and decorative layouts without doing the pixel math yourself.

Copy and Paste for Fast Duplication
Copy and paste work as a pair. Copy records the volume between two corners, then paste rebuilds it elsewhere. Press R to rotate the pasted volume in 90-degree steps on the vertical axis, which makes repeating details, rooms, and modules trivial.

Tunneling Through Terrain
Tunnel mode carves a passage by placing or removing blocks along a set direction. You define the width, height, and depth in the settings, which turns slow pickaxe work into a single sweep for mines, roads, and underground routes.

Clearing Ground With Blast Mode
Blast mode clears blocks in an area like TNT but without the dangerous explosions or lost drops. It is the fastest way to prep a build site or tear down an old structure. In survival, keep TNT in your inventory so the mode has something to consume.

Make sure you have enough TNT in your inventory.

Wand Tiers, Undo, and Survival Rules
Each wand tier has a per-action block limit, configured in wands.json. Higher tiers handle more blocks at once, so upgrading your wand directly raises how much you can build in a single click.
Undo Last Action
Mistakes happen. There is a dedicated undo key that rolls back the previous placement, which takes the pressure off experimental builds. Undo works fully in creative and lets you reverse misclicks without rebuilding by hand.

Pulling Blocks From Shulker Boxes
In survival the wand pulls blocks from Shulker boxes in your inventory before anything else. That means you can carry far more material on a big project and keep building instead of running back to a chest every few minutes.
Destroying Blocks With an Offhand Tool
The wand can also destroy blocks when you hold a tool in your offhand. In creative, any tool breaks any block. In survival the tool has to match the block, so a pickaxe handles stone and an axe handles wood. That rule keeps the destroy feature balanced inside normal survival play.
Optional XP Cost
Server owners can add an experience cost to block placement through the same config file. Set a per-block XP rate and players spend levels to use the wand, which is useful for multiplayer servers that want to keep rapid building in check.

Respecting Claimed Land
Building Wands checks land protection before it acts. It will not place or destroy blocks inside claimed or protected chunks, so it plays nicely with common claim mods. On servers running FTB Chunks, Flan, Open Parties and Claims, or Get Off My Lawn, a wand respects those boundaries automatically. That makes it safe to hand out on multiplayer worlds without worrying about griefing through the tool.
Shaders and the Preview Ghost Block
When you run shaders the placement preview can stop rendering. If the ghost outline disappears, open your config and set render_last to true. That tells the mod to draw the preview after the shader pass so it shows up again.
Installing Building Wands
The install is the standard mod-loader flow, just matched to whichever loader your pack already uses. If you are new to loaders in general, our Minecraft Fabric and Minecraft Forge primers cover the basics, and the general how to install Minecraft mods walkthrough works for any loader.
Drop the matching JAR into your mods folder after installing your loader. The wand depends on Architectury and Cloth Config, plus the Fabric API on Fabric, so install those dependencies first or the game will crash on startup. Server operators should install the same files on the server side, since the mod runs on both client and server.
Building Wands FAQ
How many placement modes does Building Wands have?
The wand ships with around fourteen modes covering single blocks, rows, columns, fills, areas, grids, lines, circles, copy and paste, tunnels, and blast clearing. You cycle between them with the V key.
Does Building Wands work on multiplayer servers?
Yes, and it is built with multiplayer in mind. It runs on both client and server, respects land-claim boundaries from supported claim mods, and lets server owners tune the XP cost and block limits in the config.
Is Building Wands still being maintained?
Yes. The project stays active, with releases published as recently as June 2026 across its supported loaders. Check the project page for the current file list before you update.
Do I need any other mods for it to load?
Yes. Install Architectury and Cloth Config first, and add the Fabric API if you run Fabric. Without those dependencies the wand will not launch. They are all small, stable libraries.
Can I undo a build I messed up?
Yes. The wand has a dedicated undo key that reverts your most recent action, which works fully in creative. Pair it with copy and paste and you can iterate on a design without permanent consequences.
