Enemy Expansion is a hostile mob mod for Minecraft that refreshes combat with dozens of new creatures to fight, flee, or befriend. Where vanilla fights get repetitive, this one drops sprinter zombies, vampires, trolls, giant rideable tarantulas, and a colossal silverfish skeleton into your world, each with its own behavior, drops, and config options. The project is currently discontinued, so treat the build you install as the final one. The gallery below walks through every mob and item in the order you'll meet them.

New hostile mobs

Undead variants

Sprinter Zombie

A fast zombie that breaks into a sprint the moment it spots you. Land a hit and it stumbles for a beat, giving you a small window to reposition before the charge starts again.

Slugger Zombie

The slugger trades speed for raw melee damage. Tag it and it surges forward with a short speed burst, so the worst moment to fight one is right after you've already swung.

Meature

A sunproof zombie that scavenges rotten flesh from nearby corpses or other zombies when no player is around. You can tame one with rotten flesh, and a lucky kill occasionally drops the Meathead helmet.

Equestrian

These ride skeletal horses and pose a real mobile threat. Hurt the steed and it panics into a wild run, throwing off your aim. Some carry signal bells that speed up nearby zombies, and a rare drop yields the Horsehead helmet for the same boost.

Botfly

Botflies erupt from slain zombies in twitchy, fragile swarms. A single one is nothing, but the spawn rate is configurable, so a bad night can bury you in bodies.

Huntsman

Skilled archers that hit you with knockback in melee and rain arrows from distance. Close the gap fast or they'll chip you down before you ever reach them.

Goblin

Cowardly thieves. Goblins bolt from a fight but steal experience orbs on contact, briefly slowing you. Kill the one that robbed you and the stolen XP comes back.

Starved

Idle skeletal fossils half-buried in deserts. They sleep until disturbed, and some hide treasure inside, so the choice is whether the loot is worth waking them.

Arthropods and cave dwellers

Tarantula

A tougher spider variant found in dripstone caves. Hurt it and it dashes at you. Right-click one and you can ride it peacefully (kinda cute, not gonna lie).

Scorpion

Desert scorpions sting for poison and weakness. Damage one and it goes almost fully invisible, leaving only its glowing eyes to track.

Ladybug

Passive giant beetles in lush caves that fight off spiders and trade healing eyes for spider eyes, which you can eat to heal or gain a buff. Anger one and it turns into a deadlier Zadybug.

Wasp

Daytime wasps that swarm as a group at night, circling wounded targets. Throw a wasp thorax and it summons drone minions, though drones packed too close together may start infighting.

Flutterfly

Rare, huge butterfly swarms that grant regeneration to anyone who pets them. You can bottle or eat them for quick healing, but attacking one brings harsh consequences.

Boss-tier threats

Vampire

The standout threat. Vampires drain health on bite and stack blindness plus a burning effect in sunlight. Mobs they kill rise as vampires, and an injured one can shrink and refill its health bar, so finish them before they slip away.

Troll

Slow, towering brutes. A hurt troll roars to shove back players and mobs, and an enraged troll spins into a whirlwind that hits twice as hard and eats nearby zombies to heal itself. Kill one and it may drop gear from the mobs it devoured. Sunlight turns them to decorative blocks.

Silverqueen

A colossal silverfish and skeleton hybrid. It alternates between a rush-down phase and an invulnerable coiled defense. Land enough damage and it collapses back into a worm, which is your opening to actually kill it.

Items and armor

Alongside the mobs, Enemy Expansion adds a small set of items and armor tied to the new creatures.

Phantasm Armor Set

A rare nighttime armor set. The cowl grants night vision, the cape adds resistance, the leggings give jump boost, and the boots add speed. Crouch and you leap extreme height and distance.

Phantom Eye

Crafted from healing eyes and phantom membranes, used to make the phantasm cowl. You can also throw one to briefly grant night vision to whatever it hits.

Installing Enemy Expansion

Grab the JAR that matches your loader and Minecraft version from the mod's project page, then drop it in your mods folder. You need Forge or NeoForge installed first, so if you're new to that, our how to install Minecraft mods guide and the Forge setup walkthrough cover it step by step. Some builds also require the GeckoLib library. There's no separate wiki, so the project page and the source repo on GitHub (infernalstudios/Enemy-Expansion) are the reference if a spawn behaves oddly.

Compatibility and configuration

Enemy Expansion leans on a config file rather than in-game menus. You can tune spawn rates, restrict mobs to certain Y levels, replace vanilla mobs, and control where the armor pieces appear. For finer spawn control it pairs with In Control! and Bad Mobs, which is also the recommended fix for the known light-level spawning quirk in newer builds.

If you like harder combat, pair it with Better Combat for overhauled attack animations, or raid Apocalyptic Fortress for hostile structures worth the trip.

Enemy Expansion mod FAQ

Is Enemy Expansion still being maintained?

No. The author has stated development is discontinued. The last release landed in November 2024, so install that build and don't expect further updates. Check the project page for any change in status.

Does it need any other mods to run?

Only as a loader requirement. Install a compatible loader first, and some builds need the GeckoLib library. Beyond that it's standalone, though In Control! or Bad Mobs help if you want to tame the spawns.

Can I turn off specific mobs?

Yes. The config file lets you disable or adjust individual spawns, and pairing it with Bad Mobs gives you per-mob kill switches for cleaner control.

Is it safe for a survival world?

It's combat-focused and noticeably harder than vanilla, especially at night and in caves. Back up your world before adding it, and tune the config down if the swarm counts feel unfair.
