What the Flying Castles mod adds

The Flying Castles mod drops randomly generated castles into the sky above your Minecraft world, and no two ever feel the same. Each floating stronghold rolls its own size, layout and loot, so every discovery is a fresh excursion rather than a copy-paste dungeon. The big stone keeps even hide two diamond blocks somewhere inside, rewarding players who actually search the place instead of looting the chest by the door and leaving.

You can also grab the structure blocks from the creative inventory if you want to place or test castle generation yourself.

Castle variants and the spawn gamerule

The mod ships several builds of the same jar, and they behave differently depending on which one you install. The combined file is the most flexible, letting you switch the population type on the fly with the flyingcastlestype gamerule. Set it to 1 for knights, 2 for villagers, or 3 for empty castles.

The knight build fills the castles with hostile guards. The village build turns them into small communities with villagers and iron golems wandering the halls. The empty build leaves the structures quiet for players who just want to explore. There is also a pillager spawner build that seeds the structures with hostile spawners throughout.

Mobs you will meet inside

The knight build is where the mod earns its name, adding a small roster of medieval mobs with their own behaviors and gear.

Knights come armored in iron with iron swords, and they defend their castle on sight. Treat them as the baseline threat.

Archers keep their distance and shoot you down the moment they spot you, so closing the gap fast matters more than trading arrows.

Heavy knights wear gold armor and carry iron swords. The dangerous part is that taking a chunk of their health can trigger an attack boost, so drawn-out fights work against you.

Nobles run from you and drop decent loot on death, sometimes including blaze rods or the Nobles Amulet itself.

Peasants are timid too, but they drop iron nuggets and become useful trade partners once you hold the right item.

There is also a magic knight that lobs slow-moving magic projectiles. A hit briefly stops your movement, and it can enchant the armor and weapons of nearby knights and archers, turning an easy fight into a rough one if you let it live.

The Nobles Amulet and trading

The Nobles Amulet is the key to everything peaceful inside a castle. Hold it and the knights stop treating you as a threat, which opens up trade with peasants, nobles and magic knights. Right-click while holding it and every mob in the area freezes for a few seconds, handy when a fight is going sideways or you just want to walk past a packed gatehouse.

Nobles trade rare items in exchange for an emerald block.

Peasants trade villager workbenches for a single iron ingot, which is a cheap way to stock up on workstation blocks.

Magic knights trade brewing items for a lapis lazuli block. The amulet also makes the knights from the companion Knights mod neutral, though it does not enable trading with that mod's nobles and peasants.

How to install Flying Castles

Installing the mod is the standard Forge or NeoForge workflow. If you have not set up a loader yet, the Minecraft Forge guide walks through it, and the general how to install Minecraft mods primer covers the rest.

  1. Install Forge or NeoForge for your Minecraft version and launch the game once with that profile.
  2. Download the Flying Castles jar that matches your loader and Minecraft version.
  3. Drop the jar into your mods folder.
  4. Launch the game and explore until you spot a castle floating overhead.

Use the flyingcastlestype gamerule to switch between knights, villagers and empty castles without swapping jars (combined build only).

Frequently asked questions

Can I explore the castles without fighting?

Yes. Grab the empty build, or use the combined file and set the flyingcastlestype gamerule to 3. The structures stay intact with no mobs walking through them, which is ideal for builders who just want the scenery.

How do I trade with the castle mobs?

Hold the Nobles Amulet. While it is in your hand, knights go neutral and peasants, nobles and magic knights open their trade screens. Without it, the knight variants stay hostile and the others run from you.

Does the mod need any other mods installed?

No. Drop the jar into your mods folder and it runs on its own. The Knights mod is an optional companion that lets the same knights spawn out in the wider world, but it is not required.

Are the castles compatible with other structure mods?

They generate independently as world features, so they tend to coexist fine with other structure mods. If you stack a lot of them, keep an eye on spawn density in larger modpacks.

Is Flying Castles still being updated?

The last release is from May 2025. Check the project page for the current status before building a long-term world around it, since the gap since then is sizable.
