Iris Shaders | OptiFine-Compatible Shaders
Iris Shaders loads OptiFine shader packs in Minecraft with the speed of Sodium. Open source, easy to install, and built for smooth frame rates.
What Iris Shaders Actually Does
Iris Shaders is a shader pack loader for Minecraft Java Edition. It runs the same OptiFine shader packs you already know, but pairs them with Sodium so your frame rate holds up while the lighting, shadows, and water reflections kick in. The result is the pretty screenshots you want without the lag that usually makes you switch shaders back off ten minutes later.
The project is open source under the LGPL license. That matters because OptiFine has restrictive licensing and breaks compatibility with a lot of other mods. Iris was built to sidestep both problems, and it has racked up well over a hundred million downloads since launch.
How Iris Works With Sodium
Sodium is the rendering optimization mod that rewrites how Minecraft draws the world. OptiFine and Sodium are mutually incompatible, which forces a choice between better performance and shaders. Iris removes that choice. It loads shader packs on top of Sodium, so you get the rendering speed of Sodium and the visuals of a shader pack at the same time.
The installer even bundles Sodium for you, so you do not have to hunt down a separate file or worry about mismatched versions.
Key Features
- OptiFine shader pack support. Most popular packs work without modification, including packs explicitly designed for Iris.
- Fast shader switching. Swap between presets from the in-game menu without a long reload, which makes it easy to compare looks side by side.
- Sodium integration. Ships with Sodium built in, keeping frame rates high even with a heavy pack enabled.
- Open source. The full codebase lives in a public repository, so anyone can read it, extend it, or report bugs.

Installing Iris Shaders
The simplest path is the official Iris installer. Run it, pick your Minecraft version, and it drops both Iris and Sodium into the right profile in one step.
If you prefer to set things up by hand, the steps look like this:
- Install a compatible mod loader first. Fabric is the most common choice for Iris setups, and our Minecraft Fabric guide walks through it. NeoForge is also supported.
- Drop the Iris jar and the Sodium jar into your
modsfolder. - Place your downloaded shader pack (a
.zipfile) into theshaderpacksfolder inside your Minecraft directory. Create that folder if it does not exist yet. - Launch the game, open Options, then Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and pick your pack.

Compatibility Notes
Iris runs cleanly alongside most mods. A few rendering mods need extra care. OptiFine itself, Canvas, and Vulkan-based renderers are incompatible and will crash if loaded together with Iris. Mods like Distant Horizons work only with shader packs that explicitly support them. Resource packs that rely on core shaders will not render correctly while a shader pack is active, but ordinary texture packs are fine.
If you currently use OptiFine and want to switch, our OptiFine overview covers the differences, and pairing Iris with a polished pack like BSL Shaders is a popular starting point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Iris cause a performance hit?
Most players see better performance than they did with OptiFine, because Iris runs on top of Sodium. Heavy shader packs will still cost frames on weaker hardware, but the drop is usually smaller than you would expect.
Can I use Iris with other mods?
Yes. The vast majority of mods are compatible. Only rendering mods that replace the same pipeline, such as OptiFine or Canvas, conflict with Iris.
Do I need a powerful computer?
There is no hard requirement. Aim for at least 4 GB of RAM allocated to Minecraft, and more if you run a demanding shader pack or a large modpack.
Is Iris still being maintained?
Yes. The latest release landed in June 2026, and the project ships updates alongside new Minecraft versions. Check the project page for the current status if you are reading this well past that date.
Will my OptiFine shader pack work?
Most popular OptiFine packs work out of the box, and many pack authors now test against Iris directly. If a pack relies on an obscure OptiFine feature you may hit a visual glitch, but support is broad.
