One Island | Survive a Single Island in an Endless Ocean
One Island makes every new survival world spawn you on a single island in an endless and deeper ocean, with no other land anywhere for miles.
If you want survival with a hard ceiling on early resources, One Island is built for exactly that kind of run. It is a small worldgen mod that reshapes world generation so you spawn on one island in the middle of an endless ocean. No mainland waits on the horizon, and there is no continent half a map away. Everything you gather, grow, and build has to come from that single patch of land and the water around it. The mod has picked up more than 120,000 downloads so far, and setup only takes a few minutes.
Endless Ocean World Generation
The mod commits fully to its one idea. You spawn on a small survival island in an endless ocean world, and there are no other islands anywhere on the map. The ocean itself generates deeper than normal, and that is not just for looks. The extra depth exists to stop a known vanilla issue where patches of land generate inside ocean biomes. With a deeper ocean floor in place, the world past your beach stays nothing but open water.
Sailing takes on a different weight too. A boat trip becomes a committed crossing instead of a quick hop to the next coast, and there is no promise of land if you go far. You work with what the island holds and what the sea gives up, which is the exact pressure castaway players are after.
Not everyone wants their islands sitting in water though. If a world of land in the sky sounds more like it, we also covered Stratospherical Expansion, a sky islands mod.
Seeds, Rivers, and the Biomes You Will Not Find
A few vanilla features sit this world out, and it is better to know before you commit. There are no mushroom islands anywhere, so do not plan an early mycelium stop on your route. Dripstone caves and the deep dark are also likely missing, because those biomes only generate inland. The developer has noted that these cave biomes may arrive in a future update if enough players ask for them.
Seeds decide more here than they do in a normal world. Once in a while a river carves across and overtakes your island, turning prime building space into open water. When that happens the advice is simple, start a fresh world and test another seed until one rolls an island worth keeping.

Resize or Remove Your Island in One Config File
Out of the box, the mod generates the standard island, but the size is yours to change through the bundled data pack. Open data/one_island/worldgen/density_function/spawn.json and you will find two numbers that control it. Comments inside the file explain what each edit does, so you do not need prior worldgen experience to follow along. Push the values one way and your island stretches to thousands of blocks long. Push them the other way and you can remove it entirely, which is handy for testing a pure ocean world.
One note, this file editing is data pack only. The developer lists in-game configuration for the mod version as a future plan, which would remove the manual editing step entirely.
How to Install One Island
Setup is standard mod work, and the mod supports Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt.
- Install a mod loader. If you have never modded before, our step-by-step Minecraft mod installation guide explains the process from a clean start, and our Fabric loader guide covers that setup in detail.
- Download the One Island file for your loader from the official project page.
- Place the file in your mods folder, creating the folder first if it is missing.
- Launch the game through the loader profile you installed.
- Create a new world. Island generation comes from worldgen, so it shows up in a fresh world and puts you straight onto your island.
One Island FAQ
Does One Island work on multiplayer servers?
Yes, and that is where it matters most. Server side installation is required, while client side installation is optional for players joining. With the mod in place on the server, the island worldgen applies to new worlds created there.
Can I change the size of the island?
Yes, through the data pack rather than a settings menu. Edit the two numbers in data/one_island/worldgen/density_function/spawn.json, and the range runs from an island thousands of blocks long down to removing it entirely. In-game configuration is on the developer's future plans list.
Will One Island conflict with other mods or packs?
The developer rates the chance high that it works with most packs, with one known caveat, the world generation may end up overridden to this island setup. If you run a pack for its custom biomes or terrain, test your world and confirm the generation behaves the way you expect before committing.
Is One Island still updated?
The most recent update shipped in March 2026, so the project is actively maintained. In-game configuration is one of the future plans the developer has named, so check the official project page before starting a long world.
