Honest Work is a Minecraft leveling mod from Lumintorious that turns gathering into a progression system. Every block you break and crop you harvest feeds a proficiency score, and that score compounds into bigger yields the longer you play. Instead of automating everything with villagers and iron farms, you get a real reason to go out and mine, chop, and farm yourself.

How the proficiency system works

The mod watches what you collect and sorts it into categories like mining, woodcutting, farming, and combat. Each category levels independently, so a player who lives underground ends up with a very different skill profile from one who builds farms and tends crops. When a category crosses a level threshold, your future harvests from that category gain a yield multiplier. Hit level 5 in mining and each ore drop roughly doubles, and the multiplier keeps scaling as you push further.

This is the "honest work" angle. The author pitches it as an alternative to enslaving villagers and breeding iron golems for your resources. If you would rather spelunk for iron than run a factory, the mod makes that playstyle genuinely pay off.

The more you gather the more you level up

Categories, modded ores, and data packs

The category list is not locked to vanilla. You can add new categories and new blocks through data packs, which means modded ores and custom crops can flow into the same leveling loop. Configs let you tune difficulty and the size of the yield multipliers, so you can dial the mod from a gentle nudge toward manual gathering all the way up to a hardcore grind where every resource is earned the hard way.

Installing the mod

The install path is the standard loader route. Grab the release JAR for your Minecraft version, drop it into your mods folder alongside the loader it targets, and launch the game. If you have not set up a loader yet, our how to install Minecraft mods walkthrough covers the basics, and the Fabric guide helps if that is the loader your build uses. The config files appear on first launch if you want to retune the multipliers.

Frequently asked questions

What does Proficiency: Honest Work actually do? It adds a gathering-based leveling system. Your mining, woodcutting, farming, and combat categories gain levels as you collect items, and higher levels grant multipliers on future resource yields.

Can I add my own categories and items? Yes. Categories and blocks are data-driven, so you can extend the mod with data packs to cover modded ores, custom crops, or anything else you want leveled.

Is the mod still being maintained? The last release landed in June 2023, so the project has been quiet for a while. Check the project page for any newer activity before building a long-term pack around it.

Does it work with modded ores and crops? It can. Because categories are data-driven, you can register modded blocks through a data pack so they feed the same proficiency progress and multipliers.

If you enjoy progression overlays, pair it with other leveling-flavored mods like Just Leveling or the Passive Skill Tree mod.
