Stratospherical Expansion | Sky Islands Mod
Stratospherical Expansion is a Forge world gen mod that rebuilds the Overworld as floating sky islands, with reimagined biomes and an optional dimensional mode.

What Stratospherical Expansion Does
Once the mod is loaded, the Overworld is no longer a solid landmass. Terrain is carved into floating sky islands, and familiar biomes are rebuilt to suit the new vertical layout. Expect lush green forests, snow-capped mountains, and deserts all suspended above the void rather than sitting on a flat ground layer. The vanilla blocks and mobs you know are still there, just rearranged around a sky-island theme.
The mod is Forge only and must be installed on both the client and the server. It depends on TerraBlender, so that library needs to land in your mods folder alongside the main JAR. It is MIT licensed and the author explicitly allows it in any modpack.

The Dimensional Mode Alternative
Not everyone wants the Overworld rewritten. For players who would rather keep the vanilla world intact and visit sky islands on their own terms, Stratospherical Expansion offers a dimensional build. Instead of overwriting the Overworld, it adds a separate stratospheric dimension full of floating islands.
To get there you fly up to Y=420 in the Overworld, which punches you through into the stratospheric realm. Coming home is just as direct: drop into the void of the stratospheric dimension and you land back where you started. It is a clean way to sample the sky-island aesthetic without committing your survival world to it.

How to Install Stratospherical Expansion
Because it is Forge only, the setup is the standard Forge workflow rather than a Fabric one. If you have never run a Forge mod before, the Forge loader guide walks through the install, and the general Minecraft mod install guide covers the rest of the basics.
- Install Forge for your target version.
- Add TerraBlender to your mods folder, matching the Minecraft version.
- Drop the Stratospherical Expansion JAR into the same mods folder.
- Launch the game with the Forge profile and create a fresh world so the sky-island generator takes effect.
A quick note on existing saves: the overworld overhaul changes how terrain generates, so it works best with a brand new world. Loading it into an old save will not retroactively reshape chunks that have already been explored.
Compatibility and Project Status
Stratospherical Expansion is built around TerraBlender, which is the same world-generation layer that many modern biome mods rely on, so it slots in alongside other TerraBlender-based packs without much friction. The author notes it is fine to bundle into modpacks under the MIT license.
One thing worth knowing before you commit: the project is outdated. The developer now points players to the OG Stratospherical preset inside Ecospherical Expansion, a successor available on both Forge and Fabric. If you are starting fresh and want something still maintained, that preset is the recommended path. Stratospherical Expansion itself still runs on the versions it targets, just with no new updates planned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Stratospherical Expansion a Fabric mod? No. It is Forge only. If you need a Fabric-compatible equivalent, the developer's Ecospherical Expansion successor ships the OG Stratospherical preset for both loaders.
Do I need any other mods for it to work? Yes, TerraBlender is a hard dependency. Both the main mod and TerraBlender have to sit in your mods folder, and TerraBlender has to match the Minecraft version you are running.
Can I keep my old world? You can load an existing save, but chunks you have already visited will not regenerate as sky islands. Create a new world to actually see the overworld overhaul take effect.
Is it server-friendly? It is. The mod needs to be present on both the client and the server, so put the JAR and TerraBlender in both mods folders when you run a server.
Is it free to include in a modpack? Yes. The mod is MIT licensed and the author states it may be used in any modpack.
