What the Arcane Lanterns Mod Does

Arcane Lanterns gives the humble vanilla lantern a magical upgrade. You craft a special work block called the Lantern Maker, load it with catalyst items, then drop a regular lantern on top to infuse it with a lasting effect. The result is a set of decorative light sources that also shape the world around them, speeding up your farm, protecting your base, or sabotaging anything that wanders too close.

It is a modern, polished port of the older Magical Lanterns mod by Playelectro, rebuilt by Fuzs and the LunaPixel team with cleaner recipes and fixes. If you like utility blocks that earn their spot in a build instead of just sitting there, this mod earns one fast.

Crafting Your First Lantern Maker

The Lantern Maker is the heart of the mod. Without it, none of the infused lanterns are possible.

Place the maker down in the world and the workflow is simple. Add the catalyst items that define which effect you want, then set a vanilla lantern block on top. The maker consumes the catalysts and hands you back a fully infused lantern you can place anywhere.

How Catalysts Decide the Effect

Each lantern type is unlocked by a specific set of catalysts, so the items you feed the Maker directly choose what you get. The Life Lantern, for example, runs on eggs, melon, golden apple, sugar cane, and bone meal, and it makes nearby crops grow faster. Think of catalysts as the recipe, and the resulting lantern as the finished tool.

Recipes for every lantern are viewable through JEI or REI, so you never have to guess. Below are the lanterns you can create and what each one actually does.

Every Lantern and Its Effect

Feral Lantern

This lantern lights up a giant area around it by spawning sparks. When the area is fully lit and enough sparks have been spawned, the lantern vanishes.

Love Lantern

This lantern makes nearby mobs fall in love, which pairs perfectly with a breeding pen or animal farm.

Wailing Lantern

This lantern cries if you get close, and it screams and applies nausea if you get even closer. Great for a haunted build or a sneaky trap.

Boreal Lantern

This lantern slows nearby mobs and players, and it also extinguishes burning mobs. Handy around a mob switch or a fire-prone farm.

Brilliant Lantern

This lantern turns nearby animals directly into experience, giving you a quiet, hands-off XP source.

Warding Lantern

This lantern pushes all living entities except players away. Drop one near a door to keep the mobs at arm's length.

Containment Lantern

This lantern keeps all living entities except the player confined to an area, which is ideal for building a no-escape trap or holding pen.

Withering Lantern

This lantern applies the wither effect in the area around it, so anything caught nearby slowly takes damage.

Cloud Lantern

This lantern applies the slow fall effect in the area around it, perfect for a safe landing zone on top of a tall base.

Installing Arcane Lanterns

Setup is straightforward but the mod has a couple of library dependencies you need to grab first. Puzzles Lib is required on Fabric and NeoForge, Fabric API is required on Fabric, and Forge Config API Port is also required on Fabric. Match each library to the same loader you picked for the mod itself.

Once the libraries are in place, the install is the standard Minecraft mods workflow. If you are running Fabric, install Fabric and the Fabric API, then drop the Arcane Lanterns jar plus its libraries into your mods folder and launch the game. The mod needs to be present on both the client and the server, so add it to both sides if you play multiplayer.

Arcane Lanterns FAQ

Do I need a separate mod to see the recipes?

No. Recipes and catalyst lists for every lantern show up in JEI or REI, so install either one and you can browse the full catalog in game.

Can I use these lanterns on a multiplayer server?

Yes, as long as the mod and its libraries are installed on both the client and the server. The page lists it as required on client and required on server.

Is the mod still being updated?

Yes. The project is actively maintained, with version 26.2 released on June 21, 2026, so check the project page for the current status and newest build.

How is this different from the old Magical Lanterns mod?

Arcane Lanterns is a modern port of Playelectro's original Magical Lanterns, rebuilt for current Minecraft with cleaner recipes, fixes, and quality of life improvements. The core idea is the same, but the implementation is refreshed.

Do the lanterns need redstone or fuel to keep working?

No fuel is needed. Once placed, an infused lantern applies its effect passively in the area around it, so it works the moment you set it down.
