Auto Third Person is a clientside Minecraft mod that automatically switches your camera to third-person whenever you fly an elytra, ride an animal, boat, or minecart, or swim underwater. The moment you stop flying or dismount, it restores whatever view you were using before. You stop hammering F5 every time you take off or hop in a boat. The camera just handles itself.

What Is Auto Third Person?

This small clientside-only quality-of-life mod comes from quat1024. Instead of manually toggling F5 each time your situation changes, the mod watches for a handful of activities (elytra flight, riding, swimming underwater) and flips the camera to third-person for you, then drops you back to first-person, or whatever you were on, when the activity ends. It is purely visual and runs only on your client, so it is safe on any server without the server needing to install anything.

What Auto Third Person Adds

  • Automatically switches to third-person camera when flying an elytra, riding an animal, boat, or minecart, or swimming underwater.
  • Restores your previous camera view the instant the triggering activity stops.
  • A toggle key (listed under Miscellaneous, unbound by default) lets you temporarily disable the mod without touching your config.
  • Option to disable the "first-person flipped" camera.
  • An extensive config file controls the details: enable third-person during the swimming animation, set how long to wait before auto-switching, and tune a stack of other behaviors.

How to Install Auto Third Person

  1. Install a compatible loader for your Minecraft version, whether Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt. Our how to install Minecraft mods guide walks through the whole flow if you are new to it.
  2. Download the jar that matches your Minecraft version and loader.
  3. Drop the jar into your mods/ folder and launch the game with that loader profile selected.
  4. Configure to taste: Forge exposes a regular config GUI, while Fabric versions reload the config with F3+T or the /auto_third_person reload client command.

Compatibility and Known Issues

  • Clientside only: no server-side install required, so it works on any multiplayer server.
  • Supports a broad spread of Minecraft versions. Some older builds are marked unmaintained.
  • The oldest builds run on a separate legacy codebase through Voldeloom.
  • Includes a fix for the weirdly rotated first-person hand on older builds, plus a backport of shift-to-exit-vehicles for the earliest releases.

FAQ

Does Auto Third Person work on servers?

Yes. It is clientside only, so you can drop it into your client mods/ folder and join any server. The server does not need the mod installed.

Can I turn it off temporarily?

Yes. Bind the toggle key under Miscellaneous in your controls (it is unbound by default) and press it to disable the mod for as long as you like.

How do I reload the config on Fabric?

Press F3+T to hot-reload the config file, or run the /auto_third_person reload client command. Forge versions use a standard Forge config file and GUI instead.
