Dynamic FPS | Cut Background CPU and GPU Usage
Dynamic FPS drops your frame rate, volume, and notifications when Minecraft is in the background, idle, or on battery, so your PC stays free for other tasks.
Tab out of Minecraft to check a recipe or reply to a message and the game keeps rendering at full speed behind your browser. Fans spin up, your CPU and GPU stay busy, and a laptop battery drains for frames nobody is watching. Dynamic FPS fixes that. It watches the state of the game window and scales frame rate, volume, and notifications to match, so an idle Minecraft stops costing you performance. With around 73 million downloads, it has earned a permanent spot in plenty of modded setups.

A Setting for Every Window State
Dynamic FPS recognizes four states for the Minecraft window: active, hovered over, unfocused, and invisible. Each state gets its own configuration, so you decide the frame rate cap, the volume level, and whether toast notifications keep appearing while you are away. Toasts are the small pop-up notifications that appear in the corner of the screen, and pausing them while you are tabbed out keeps a background game from cluttering your desktop or your recordings.
The range goes further than a simple cap. Unfocused Minecraft can drop to as little as 1 FPS, and when the window is invisible or minimized the mod can stop rendering entirely. Nothing on screen means nothing worth drawing, so your hardware gets a real break instead of a token one.

Idle Timers and Battery Saving
Some situations do not depend on the window at all. Dynamic FPS lets you set a custom idle timeout, so after a stretch of inactivity your idle settings kick in on their own. Stand at an AFK farm long enough and the mod quietly ramps things down until you come back.
Battery handling is the draw for laptop and handheld players. You can set separate limits for when the device runs on battery, show the current battery status on the in-game HUD, and receive toast notifications about battery activity like charging and discharging. One detail to know before you enable it: the battery integration downloads an additional library at runtime. The mod stores hashes for those files ahead of time and verifies them before use, and you can disable the behavior in the settings or install the library yourself using the project's documentation.

Background CPU Fixes for Low-End PCs
Beyond the state profiles, Dynamic FPS patches two vanilla problems. First, it fixes a bug where Minecraft uses more CPU than necessary while sitting in the background. Second, it stops rendering the world while the resource loading overlay covers the screen, which helps a lot on low-end systems that chug every time a pack reloads.
The way low frame caps work is clever too. The mod never slows the client render loop below 15 cycles per second. Lower targets are hit by cancelling superfluous frames instead, so a 1 FPS setting renders one frame out of every 15. The payoff is responsiveness. When you click back into the game it checks in within a fraction of a second, instead of leaving you stuck waiting up to a full second for the next frame.
This mod trims waste while you are away from the keyboard. If you want more frames while you are actually playing, Sodium is the usual first pick for raw gains, and ImmediatelyFast speeds up HUD, text, and entity rendering on top of it.
How to Install Dynamic FPS
Dynamic FPS is a client-side mod. Server-side use is unsupported, so you install it on your own game and leave the server untouched.
- Download Dynamic FPS from the official project page. Builds are available for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt, so grab the one that matches your setup.
- Install the matching loader if you have not already. Our guide on how to install Minecraft mods covers the full process, and the Fabric loader guide is the fastest path if you are starting from scratch.
- Drop the downloaded jar file into your mods folder.
- Add Mod Menu and Cloth Config as well. They are required to open the in-game config screen where the per-state settings live.
- Launch the game, open the mods list through Mod Menu, and set your frame rate, volume, toast, idle, and battery options.
Dynamic FPS FAQ
Does Dynamic FPS work on servers? No. It is a client-side mod and server-side use is unsupported. Install it on your own game and nothing needs to be added to a server, since everything happens on your client.
How do I change the settings? Through the in-game config screen, which needs Mod Menu and Cloth Config installed. Every window state has its own frame rate, volume, and toast options, and there are separate profiles for idle and battery use.
Why does my FPS counter show 15 when my cap is lower? The render loop never runs below 15 cycles per second. Lower caps are produced by cancelling extra frames, so a 1 FPS setting renders one frame out of every 15. That design lets the game respond almost instantly when you switch back to it.
Is Dynamic FPS still maintained? Yes. The most recent update released in September 2026 and the project is under active development.
Dynamic FPS asks for almost nothing and hands back battery life, cooler fans, and a machine free for other work. For more frames while you play, our Lossless Scaling guide covers a tool that takes a very different approach.
