Wakes | Boat Wakes and Water Splashes Mod
Wakes is a client-side Fabric mod that adds realistic boat wakes, splashes, and bow-wave spray to Minecraft water whenever entities move across the surface.
Wakes is a client-side Fabric mod that brings realistic boat wakes, water splashes, and bow-wave spray to Minecraft. Whenever a boat, dolphin, or player moves fast enough across the surface, the mod paints a spreading trail of ripples behind it, and falling bodies kick up a splash that scales with the height of the drop. It is a small visual flourish, but it changes how oceans and rivers feel the moment you start rowing.
What Wakes Paints on the Water
The core idea is a wake simulation that runs behind any entity moving quickly over water. Boats get the most attention because the effect lines up with the oars, so each stroke leaves its own set of ripples. Dolphins, swimming mobs, and players produce similar trails, which makes rivers and coastlines feel alive instead of static.

Waves appear at the oars of the boat.

Falling into water triggers a splash, and the size of that splash grows with the fall distance, so a hop off a dock looks tame while a cliff dive throws a real column of spray.

A bow-wave effect pushes water out to either side of a fast-moving entity, giving boats and swimmers a visible wake that fans outward. Wakes also pick up the color of the water they travel through, so a swamp looks murkier than a coral reef once you get moving.
Tuning Wakes and Shader Support
Optional debug and appearance configs are embedded with Midnightlib and reachable through Mod Menu. You can tune wave intensity, adjust the color of each wake section, and tweak splash behavior to match your preferred look. A level-of-detail option and a quad-tree spawn structure keep the simulation light on performance, so busy harbors do not tank your frame rate.

Iris shader support is built in, so the wakes render alongside your favorite shader packs rather than fighting them. A handful of shader packs have known incompatibilities, so check the project's issue tracker if a specific combination misbehaves.

Installing Wakes on Fabric
Because Wakes is a client-side mod, you only need it on the player side, not the server. The setup is straightforward.
- Install Fabric for your Minecraft version.
- Add Fabric API, which the mod requires.
- Drop the matching Wakes jar into your
modsfolder. - (Optional) Add Iris Shaders for shader support and Mod Menu for easy config access.
- Launch the Fabric profile and head for the nearest body of water.
For a detailed walkthrough of the shader side, see the Iris install guide.
Compatibility and Loader Support
There is no Forge or NeoForge port, so pick a Fabric-based loader when setting up. Wakes also bundles its own config and rendering libraries, which keeps the dependency list short.
The developer notes the project is still maturing and welcomes bug reports through the project's issue tracker. Planned future work includes foam outlines around shorelines and models, wakes on lava, and an API so other mods can hook Wakes into their own custom liquids.
Wakes Mod FAQ
Does Wakes work on multiplayer servers? Yes. The mod is client-side, so you only need it installed on your own client. Wakes produced by other players render on your screen as well, which makes shared boats and harbors look much busier.
Do I need a shader pack to see the wakes? No. Wakes render on the vanilla pipeline by default. Iris is optional and simply lets the effect blend with shader lighting and reflections.
Is Wakes safe to add to an existing world? Yes. It is purely visual and stores no data in your save, so you can add or remove it without affecting your world.
Does it work with Forge or NeoForge? No. Wakes targets Fabric and Quilt. If you play on Forge or NeoForge, you will want to switch loaders to use it.
Will it hurt my frame rate? A level-of-detail toggle and quad-tree spawning keep the simulation efficient. On most machines the impact is small, but you can dial down wave density in the config if your setup struggles.
