Better Villages | Overhauled Village Mod
Better Villages overhauls Minecraft villages with new house designs and richer layouts across Plains, Snow, Savanna, Desert, and Taiga biomes.
Vanilla Minecraft villages are fine for a quick trade, but they rarely feel like real settlements. Better Villages rewrites those generated towns so each biome gets its own architectural identity, with reworked structures, fresh house layouts, and small decorative touches that make wandering through town genuinely rewarding.
What Better Villages Changes
Better Villages targets the generated villages that appear across your world and upgrades both their look and their layout. Existing structures get repositioned and decorated, animal pens are resized, composters move to sensible spots, and farmland gets proper light and water sources. The mod also fixes grass generation inside structures and patches villager AI bugs that left residents stuck in fences and traps. The result is villages that read as lived-in places rather than loose clusters of copy-pasted huts.
Village Types, Redesigned
Each supported village type gets its own visual language, so a snow town no longer looks like a plains town with white blocks slapped on top.

Snow village

Savanna village

Desert village

A Taiga village variant rounds out the set, giving cold biomes their own redesign rather than reusing the plains template.
Reworked Structures and Layouts
The rework goes beyond swapping blocks. Streets, pens, and communal areas are rearranged so a village flows like a small settlement instead of a scattered camp.

These tweaks give you more reasons to settle in or build a base among the villagers, since the footprint now accommodates a workshop, storage, or expansion.
New House Designs
New house templates ship alongside the reworked originals, giving you fresh floor plans to loot or borrow as inspiration for your own builds. Each design keeps the biome's materials and style, so a desert house still reads as desert architecture.

Later builds also trim the hidden emerald and diamond item frames that older versions tucked into structures, so loot stays balanced.
Installing Better Villages
Getting Better Villages running takes a couple of minutes. Pick the loader your modpack already uses, whether that is Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge, then follow the same steps you would for any mod.
- Install your chosen loader first. If you are starting fresh, the Minecraft Fabric or Minecraft Forge guides walk through the setup.
- Download the matching JAR for your loader and Minecraft release.
- Grab Library Ferret as well. It is the one required dependency, and the mod will not load without it.
- Drop both JARs into your mods folder.
- Launch the game and generate or travel to a village to see the changes.
If you want a broader walkthrough, the how to install Minecraft mods guide covers the full process for each loader.
Playing Well With Other Mods
Better Villages is built to sit alongside other worldgen mods without fighting them. It plays nicely with Repurposed Structures, ChoiceTheorem's Overhauled Village, and Waystones, and the team ships optional compatibility datapacks for mods like Bountiful, Ice and Fire, More Villagers, and Immersive Engineering. More compatibility packs are on the roadmap. If you run into a conflict, the source repo on GitHub has an issues tracker where you can report it.
Better Villages FAQ
Does Better Villages replace vanilla villages or add new ones? It replaces and upgrades the vanilla village templates. You will still find villages in the same biomes, but their structures, layouts, and house designs are overhauled.
Is Library Ferret really required? Yes. Library Ferret is the shared library the mod is built on, and Better Villages will not start without it installed alongside the main JAR.
Can I use Better Villages with other village mods? In most cases, yes. It is designed for maximum compatibility and ships optional datapacks for popular additions. Repurposed Structures and ChoiceTheorem's Overhauled Village are known to work well alongside it.
Do I need to start a new world? Existing villages that have already generated keep their old layout. New chunks and fresh worlds get the redesigned villages, so a new world lets you see everything right away.
Will my save break if I remove the mod? Removing it does not corrupt your save. Already-generated villages stay where they are, and future generation falls back to vanilla templates.
