Raids in vanilla Minecraft get predictable once you have decent gear. Illager Additions changes that by introducing five hostile illagers with their own attack patterns, weapons, and movement skills. Each one forces you to rethink how you approach a fight, whether you are clearing a woodland mansion or defending a village.

Meet the Five New Illagers

Samurai

The samurai is the fastest and most agile of the new illagers. He can dodge a large number of attacks, and his sword strikes are deadly. He is also able to parry your attacks, so trading blows with him head-on is a bad idea. You will find him showing up during village raids, and he may spawn wearing armor that makes him even harder to put down.

Illager Guard

The illager guard is a master of the spear. He is highly skilled in ranged combat, and his thrown spears can inflict a lot of damage before you ever close the gap. He is also a tough opponent up close, which makes him a flexible threat. You will encounter him guarding outposts and woodland mansions, and he joins village raids too, with his strength scaling up as the difficulty rises.

Beamlogger

The beamlogger is a powerful illager who wields a corrupted beacon beam. This weapon can fire a continuous stream of energy that shreds anything caught in its path. He can also make that beam rain down on you from above, so standing still is a quick way to die. He shows up during village raids and hits hard enough to drop almost any creature in a couple of seconds.

Cowboy

The cowboy is a ranged illager who wields a revolver. He is quick and agile, rolling around to dodge your attacks and keeping his distance while he lines up shots. He is very accurate with his gun, and he can deal a lot of damage from range. The catch is his low health. If you manage to close the gap and get close, a few hits will take him down. He spawns only in the badlands biome and does not appear in raids.

Shogun

The shogun is the most powerful of the new illagers and the master of the samurai. He is a master of all the illager fighting techniques, and he is incredibly strong and durable. He leads an army to loot villages, and he has a variety of special attacks that make him a formidable opponent. His AI intensity is configurable, so you can tune the fight to your skill level.

Loot Drops

Each illager drops different loot on death, mostly their armor but sometimes their weapons. The shogun carries the best haul, dropping tons of emeralds and his signature sword that can parry attacks. That sword is worth the fight on its own, giving you a strong late-game weapon for the trouble.

How to Install Illager Additions

The install is straightforward once you have a modded loader set up. The main build runs on Minecraft Forge, and a Fabric port is also available for players on the Fabric loader.

  1. Install Forge (or Fabric) for your Minecraft version.
  2. Download GeckoLib, since the mobs use it for their animations. The Forge build also needs the Forge Config API.
  3. Drop the Illager Additions jar into your mods folder.
  4. Launch the game and check that the mod shows up in the mods list.

If you have never set up a modded profile before, our general how to install Minecraft mods guide walks through the folder structure and common pitfalls.

Compatibility with Other Illager Mods

Illager Additions plays nicely with other mob-focused packs. It is confirmed compatible with Guard Villagers, Illager Invasion, and It Takes a Pillage (Continuation), and it should run alongside most other mods that do not overhaul the same raid logic. It is a popular pick for RPG-themed modpacks that want tougher enemy variety. For more hostile-mob variety, you might also like the Pillager Queen mod or the Villagerevival mod.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the new illagers spawn?

The samurai, illager guard, beamlogger, and shogun appear during village raids, with the guard also defending outposts and woodland mansions. The cowboy spawns only in the badlands biome and stays out of raids entirely.

What does the Shogun drop?

The shogun drops a large amount of emeralds and his signature katana, which can parry attacks and comes with strong combat stats. It is one of the best weapons the mod adds.

Do I need any other mods for this to work?

The Forge build requires GeckoLib and the Forge Config API. The Fabric port needs GeckoLib as well. Aside from those animation and config libraries, the mod runs on its own.

Is Illager Additions still maintained?

The most recent release landed in February 2026. It is currently active, but it is always worth checking the project page for the latest file before you build a modpack around it.

Can I configure how hard the new illagers are?

Yes. The shogun's AI intensity is configurable, and the mod exposes a config file for tuning spawn and combat behavior to your preferred difficulty.
