Exploring oceans in vanilla Minecraft is slow and dangerous, with drowning and sluggish mining pushing you back to the surface. The Scuba Gear Mod by Modding Legacy fixes that with a full armor set designed for the water. Each piece grants a different underwater ability, from breathing to faster mining, and the Drowned themselves can spawn wearing it.

How the Scuba Gear Armor Works

The mod adds four armor pieces, and each one carries its own effect when equipped. Stack the set and the bonuses stack with it.

• Helmet grants water breathing to anything that wears it, letting you stay submerged without air pockets.
• Chestplate lets you mine at roughly normal speed while underwater, which means no more crawling through seafloor dirt and gravel.
• Leggings give a small swim speed boost so crossing ocean trenches takes less time.
• Boots let you walk faster on the seafloor instead of drifting around in slow motion.

Obtaining Each Piece of Scuba Gear

You cannot craft this armor. Instead, you loot it from the Drowned that spawn within roughly 15 blocks of an ocean ruin. The helmet is the most common drop, while the chestplate is the rarest. If a Drowned spawns wearing one piece, it also carries every piece below it in the set order. A Drowned wearing the leggings will also have the boots and helmet, so a single kill can hand you multiple parts at once.

Durability and Wearing It on Land

The armor takes damage every four seconds while it is actively in use, so keep an eye on the durability bar. Worn outside of water, each piece applies a slight speed decrease, and the helmet and chestplate hit hardest. Treat the set as dedicated dive gear rather than everyday armor.

Wearing the Full Set

Equipping all four pieces unlocks a small fire resistance bonus. Instead of you taking fire damage, the armor absorbs it, losing durability roughly twice per second in the process. That makes the full set a useful emergency tool near lava or blazes, but it burns through itself fast under sustained heat.

Repairing Scuba Gear

Since you pull this armor off the Drowned, the pieces you find are usually badly damaged. Fix them the traditional way with iron in a crafting table or anvil. The mending enchantment works on the set too, so a dedicated XP farm can keep your dive gear in service for as long as you need it.

Installing the Scuba Gear Mod

This mod runs on Forge and NeoForge, with the final release built for NeoForge. The install flow is the same as any standard mod.

1. Install a compatible Minecraft Forge or NeoForge loader profile for your version of the game.
2. Download the matching Scuba Gear JAR for your loader and game version.
3. Drop the JAR into your .minecraft/mods folder.
4. Launch the matching profile and the armor will start appearing on the Drowned near ocean ruins.

Scuba Gear Mod FAQ

Do I need to craft the scuba armor?

No. The only way to get it is by killing Drowned that spawn near ocean ruins. The pieces come pre-damaged, so plan to repair them with iron right away.

Can I wear scuba gear on land?

You can, but each piece applies a small speed penalty out of water, with the helmet and chestplate being the heaviest. Keep the set in your inventory for dives and switch back to normal armor for overland travel.

Does the full set give any bonus?

Wearing all four pieces grants a small fire resistance effect. The armor absorbs the fire damage instead of you, at the cost of roughly two durability per second, so use it as a panic button rather than permanent lava protection.

How do I repair the armor?
